1947 Restaurant, Bangalore

The 1947 Restaurant in south Bangalore is a must visit place for vegetarians.  I have been to this restaurant a number of times and somehow missed to write a review here. So, here it comes! This restaurant is situated half the way between Deve Gowda petrol pump and Kamakya cine complex, equidistant from both the places on 100ft ring road. It was a bit hard to spot this place all these days as the entrance leading way in to the restaurant hall was way too small. But not anymore, they have come up with a Banquet hall now on ground floor along with the regular previously existed dining hall. That makes it possible to accomodate small parties as well.

Very first thing that flashes on any persons mind is why the name ’1947′? To find an answer for that question, you must visit and take a good look at the interiors and ambience. Don’t be surprised if a disguise of Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru welcomes you at the very entrance. As soon as you enter inside, your attention will be caught by Charkha (a spinning wheel) and a Cannon. Apart from these two, there is a display to take you through the history of Indian tri-color flag. There is one table that everyone wants to occupy – the long glass table with cushion sofa on one side and jute on the other, separated from the rest of the place with ropes starting from the ceiling to the floor is indeed an unique style. Off late they have come up with a dining hall on the terrace which opens up to the view towards the sky and also lets you have a view of the opposite hill,  the temple on top of it. You might not find it hilly anymore, the space has been occupied to build a concrete jungle around. Talking about this hilltop, my memory goes back to the days when I used to jog and practice yoga everyday. Coming back to the restaurant, the only negative with this floor is that the tables are crumpled and are placed way too close to each other. One may find it difficult to move around on these tables, so prefer to avoid these tables if feasible when you visit next time. While the ambience speaks for itself, you will certainly love the dimly lit up premises with old hindi melodies being played at background. This soothes your ears while the hunger waits for the food.

Coming to the food and the variety, I have no second thoughts in saying that 1947 is the best Vegetarian restaurant in Bangalore. You can read my reviews on various other restaurants here. Every item that I have eaten here has a taste to remember. May it be platters, starters, main course or whatever, this place simply rocks. Here is the list of menu items I have tasted in my multiple visits and can’t wait to go there again!

Platters : Baby corn, Gobi, Mixed Vegetable Sheek, Paneer and Mushroom
Starters : Vegetable Kurkure, Tandoori baby corn, Palak ka shorba, Masala Papad and many more
Main Course : Veg panchratna, Lachcha paratha, Methi malai matar, Sabji Dum Biryani with Boondi Raita, Rotis and Kulchas with Shimla wala bhutta and Sabzi Lajawab,
Gravies: Rajashahi Dal Makhani, Kumbh Mutter Paneer, Aloo Mirch ka Salan, Sarson ka Saag and Lahori Kofta

Food price is moderate and an ideal place for occasional family eat out. If you are planning to go there on weekends, be cautious. There are no reservations allowed and it will be highly crowded. Service men are very good at their job and as the crowd has increased they may not be maintaining the same level service nowadays. Apart from that, I am sure that you will have a great time there. Forget about your calories for a while and enjoy the Indian delicecies. Feel free to share your experience at 1947..

Once upon a time they were good both for food, service, home delivery. I had a hopeless experience with them today. Food ordered for a party at home reached after 1.5 hrs – why? for travelling 2.5 kms (and no traffic)
Reasons given by their staff
- sir too many orders today
- iam othe only boy – lot of work

Boss this is the service industry – who cares.
One more good restaurant now in pits

Chethan – good to hear a positive response from you. I wish it was the same with Anand too. Consistent Customer service makes any product better. Hope the 1947 folks understand that funda and act accordingly always.

1947 is a great place for veggies. Though I am a non-veggie, I sitll love to go there and dine atleast once in a month. As you have mentioned crowd is ever increasing and difficult to get a table during weekends.

@MHA
You are absolutely right. Yes, parking is a big time issue. However, price is not so high when compared to other restaurants. I find the price for the quality and service to be just reasonable.
