Finally the wait is over to know your Employee Provident Fund (EPF) account balance. After 2 years of initial announcement to make the account information online, EPFO India has finally delivered something. As per the official note released by the PF department on July 1st of 2011, a valid active account holder will know the balance up to the date. Their claim is that all the accounts are updated for certain circles across country, which also includes the latest approved transactions of settlement/advances/transfer-in/transfer-out, if any.
This data was made initially available for Delhi (North), Delhi (South), Laxmi Nagar (Delhi), Gurgaon, Faridabad, Karnal and Bangalore. Right now PF account balance data is made available for 119 offices across India. Remaining offices records will be made available online soon as per the info on their site.
In order to know your PF account details, follow these simple steps:
- Visit the site http://www.epfindia.com/MembBal.html
- Select the EPFO office where your account is maintained
- Furnish your PF Account number in the online form.
- Leave the extension field blank, in case your account does not have one.
- You will be asked to enter your name and mobile number.
- The given mobile number will be recorded along with the PF Account Number.
- On successful submission of above information, the details will be sent through SMS to the given mobile number.

I tried these steps to get my balance yesterday. First couple of successful submissions went nowhere! I didn’t get any response. Today I was lucky upon trying for the third time! I got the SMS in about 1 hour after filling the details online. Sadly, as on today the account balance reflects the data only till 31st March 2008. We may have to wait for some more time (few more years?) to know the latest balance.
Oh yeah, one more thing. Don’t spam the comment stream below with your PF account details. I will not be able to get your details. Your comment will just be deleted if it has only such request. Can you be more specific on what you meant by ‘Claim’? is it a transfer or withdrawal? in either case, consent of your previous employer is a must.

Hi, i wud like to know my PF account balance, when i tried its giving me “Invalid Member_id / Data not updated against this BG/BNG/xxxxxxx/000/xxxxxxx”.
Upon selecting the appropriate city and offices, it is fetching the codes, but not sure abt entering my PF number, cud u plz giv a example. Say for examle if my PF a/c number is “KN/BN/12345/123456″ – what shd i entered in the website.

Vaibhav – don’t worry about the code, just follow the link given in the site and it will take up the codes upon selecting the appropriate city and offices. all you need is the numerical values of your PF number.

I had filed an RTI to K.R. Puram’s office (Bangalore) but that has gone unresponded. I dont know who is the first appeal authority. They dont pick up calls and I cannot travel all the way to bangalore. Any clue on what should be done.

I have been told by my new employer that a new account has to be created whenever employee has changed company. Then apply for PF transfer.
You are really lucky if your new company has a PF trust rather than govt agency.

I have got SMS from EPF reg. my balance. It shows Your EE Amt Rs. 8409, ER Amt Rs. 2571. I want to know my gross amount and what is ment by EE and ER.

EE means Employees Contributions and ER means Employer’s Contributions of PF. In your case, it seems you have contributed for about 11 months so far as per your balance. In this Rs 541 will go for pension scheme from the contribution of employer ( which includes in your CTC ) each month. In your case, again, for 11 months, the pension amount has been deducted from employer’s contribution and hence it is less compared to your PF contributions.

Hi, Everyone finally i got my PF balance amount after a year i applied last year in april 2011.
I got sms through EPF office in may 2011 about the confirmation it is necessary to know about your application is going to be a process.
If you are going to check data online it will be always incomplete information so don’t take tension, when i check now it is showing application in process instead i get my mony.
