New Symbol for Indian Rupee

UPDATE : New symbol has been chosen and you can read more details about it here – New Symbol for Indian Rupee finalized.

Are we going to have a new symbol to represent Indian Rupee? According to Indian finance ministry, the ‘Change’ factor seems to have hit India and its currency. The Government of India will be conducting a competition to partner with public in order to come up with an ‘Innovative symbol for Indian Rupee’. The finance ministry site has all the details and the best part of the whole program is that we too can involve in the process of coming up with a new symbol.

What it means is that each one of us have an equal chance of winning a grand prize money of INR 2,50,000/-.  The top 5 selections will receive Rs 25K each irrespective of getting selected as the final symbol. The jury of examiners would consist of seven members drawn from various organizations in the field of arts, finance, culture, history etc., All we need to do is to come up with a creative symbol(similar to $, €, ¥, £ etc.,) keep the following things in your mind and you could be in the pages of history!

The symbol should

  • Represent the historical and cultural prominence of the country.
  • Be widely acceptable across the country.
  • Be applicable to standard keyboard.
  • Be in the Indian National Language Script or a visual representation.

For more details visit finance ministry website and my best wishes are with you! Ensure that your entry reaches the right people latest by 1300 hours on 15th April 2009. Keeping all that aside, what do you feel about the whole episode of coming up with new currency symbol? Do we really need it?

There is a lot of controversy going on about the 5 Indian Rupee Symbols that have been shortlisted. I personally don’t like them. I’m sharing the one I had designed and which got through the first round but was later not taken up. Would be great to get your feedback on it, here is the link.

Why not simply use ‘+’ as the symbol to denote it? (or perhaps a stylized + with longer vertical stroke or as a small sign on the upper right hand corner smaller than the figure height)

i.e 10+ as Rs10

+ is the symbol for Ka in brahmi
and brahmi is the earliest of all Indian scripts. So it could stand for _tanka_ which was the earlier name for rupee. alternatively it could also stand for rupyaka of sanskrit from which rupee is derived.

It being in brahmi is a bonus because our nation pays homage to emperor Ashoka and brahmi was the script developed during his time possibly under his direction.

It also satisfies the requirement of usability from a standard keyboard since ‘+’ is available in all keyboards, and it is easy to write for some one since it is just two strokes.

don’t worry mr.Ananye De no one in these designs is finalised(see mr. Rakesh’s previous comment) Our ministry take 18 seconds(3 days) for choosing five candidates among 4000 ,but after seven months they could not choose one among five, what a TAMASHA all this.

Reply

Ananya de June 25, 2010 at 9:37 pm

4000 entries came for the design symbol. each person paid Rs.500/- for submitting the designs….that means about 20lakh rupees went into the govt. kitty but they came out with these flawed 5 designs.

come one if they had to only put an equalto sign on a Hindi ‘ra’ why make a such a public fiasco of throwing open the design to common man?

A) no. 1 and no.2 look like an extension of the Rx symbol of doctor’s prescription.
B) no. 2 cannot be drawn with the hand as it has a gap in continuity of the letter R
c) No. 3 and no. 4 will the equal to sign will become invisible at 6 pt. or 8 pt size.
4) no. 5 is the easiest copy of any other world symbol.

SO WHAT ALL THAT BIG EXCERCISE ABOUT? simply to earn 20,00000 rupees… DOES IT MEAN THAT THE 4000 designs we useless….????

none of the symbols represent any ethos of the INDIA, MONEY, WEALTH or IDENTITY OF INDIA.

Besides why should it be in Devnagri, when there are so many languages in India… it shuold have been a nice symbol with an R….

I wonder what the finance ministry was thinking when it penned down those conditions applicable to choice of a particular design. What in the world does it mean by “the National Language script” of India? We, as a federal republic nation comprising of so many languages, and in fact 22 odd languages officially recorded as the official languages of India (as per Schedule 8), dont actually have *ONE* national language, neither do we have *ONE* script that can represent the entire nation.

So continuing on this reasoning path, I wonder how the Fin-Ministry’s decision can be unbiased towards any people of one particular language? In fact if Hindi is what the Fin-Min is implying here, mind you, the script that Hindi uses is itself not its own! It borrows the Devanagari Script. So when coming up with a symbol, I guess graphical symbol creations (like the Pie) must be encouraged rather than a letter/character from a particular script that doesnt totally represent the entire nation.

Finance Ministry, it is time to wake up to the articles in the Indian Constitution and realize that there’s no such thing as a National Language of India, let alone having a script for this particular language.

Today the symbol is being picked from among 5 chosen designs, and seriously none of them are any different from each other, and all of them appear to be straight copies of $, Euro, Yen, Pound design styles, only slightly fiddled with to make it resemble the devanagari “R” character!

Actually I would say selection of any one among these 5 is going to be an equally bad blow to all the linguistic (and script) diversity that we find in this country. So the whole exercise is going to make it appear more painful for the rest of the country that doesnt use the Devanagari script in day-to-day life.

first of all hindi is not the national language.all the official work done in the parliament has been recorded in hindi so a devnagri ‘ra’ was the best way to represent indian currency officialy.moreover the line in the mid makes it look different.i think it is a good symbol but i do appreciate all the entries given by the people.

Finance Minister has announced in his budget speech that govt will very soon give symbol for rupee. Iam sure he is not aware of the fraud played by the bureucracy. In 2 and half days the outstanding talents of India have gathered together and evaluated? only God knows how many entries at a mind blowing speed and now to decide the final winner they have lost all the stamina and energy. I am sure Godfathers of final 5 and mastermind are fighting with each other for the crown otherwise they would not have missed the shubh muhurt of Budget to declare the design and winner. Can we proudly say that we are Indians?

I feel we should ask the following question also:

The contest circular said that the symbol should reflect the “historical and cultural ethos of India”.

But the criteria as spelt out by an RBI official to Business Standard on 17th of december,2009, says that:- “The symbol of the rupee will have an iconic meaning, which is to convey the brand value of the currency and the nation. The launch of a symbol is a step towards making it internationally acceptable for trading,” a senior RBI official said.

I can’t understand how these 2 criteria are same. “Brand value of the currency and the nation … for trading” is very different from “historical and cultural ethos…”. This is just not acceptable.

If they had spelt out the cirteria very clearly before the contest then we designers would have designed the symbol accordingly.

This is definitely another point to be raised.

File above RTI …..

RTI is a best tool to fight bureaucracy and injustice …making an application under RTI and asking for specific information, the department has to furnish the information within 1 month.

If the applicant is not happy or all the information asked for is not provided then an appeal lies to appellate authority designated in that department.
Later on this becomes the base for filing a suit in the court.

Remember the are doing this to you and hurting you dignity because you let them do it !!! So stop talking and start acting…. I am socked as well earlier every one shouting here about injustice and now while we did all the homework for you guys, now one got balls to file it what a shame….

From the day one I am closely following this great Indian bureaucracy tamasha . By profession I am concept head and brand strategy planner… in my career I launched national as well international brands
What I noticed and learned is… failing of brand and not getting recognised in market as a brand ….
Not only depends upon how you marketed that brand….but also how much efforts your creative powerhouse taken to create that image…
So to create a successful brand identity the whole process of brainstorming and vibes of designers should be clear from all kind doubt and blames.
But its oposit here in designing of rupee symbol case, whole process came under doubts from the day one because of its very confusing and unclear guidelines.
And lately RTI filed by someone from design field which exposed other discrepancies in short listing process too. More than 800 shortlisted entries were never been published in public domain…. while declaring eligible number of shortlisted design entries.
So, finally I set with my advocate and drafted down below Open RTI application… which any one of you could file it..
It takes us 3 working days to understand what really going and finally drafted all our queries on paper.
We divided queries in 4 separate RTI’s because some time authorities rejected RTI application by saying you are asking too much information.
Let me make it very clear here guys we the Young and creative mind of India is not so dull to follow a mute justice!!
We are lucky to have one last chance, as a RTI ….to make some positive change for the betterment of our Currency symbol design and by participating in this exercise we can get our dignity back…

dear all

Pl read news (ECO. TIMS)

“I had written to the RBI in 2005 saying we should have a symbol for the rupee,” said Nondita Correa-Mehrotra , one of the finalists, more marvelling at the coincidence of it all than implying it may have influenced the government.

Correa-Mehtorta is a Harvard University-trained architect and works at her father’s firm—Mumbai-based Charles Correa Associates. The final list pits two leading advertising agencies against each other for the big honour—JWT and Publicis Ambience.

Hitesh Padamshali is a creative director, design, at JWT’s Mumbai office, while Shahrukh J Irani is a creative director at Publicis Ambience. The list also has a typography scholar in D. Udaya Kumar, a PhD candidate at IIT Mumbai’s Industrial Design Centre. He is preparing to defend his dissertation—Transformation of Tamil letter forms from palm leaf manuscripts to early letter press printing—early next year.

Shibin KK, a computer science teacher at a government higher secondary school near Thalasserry, Kerala, is the fifth finalist, and an outsider of sorts with no formal training in drawing or design. However, he takes up freelance design work.

For the five finalists, it’s a agonising wait till the symbol is unveiled.

Dear all
Pl see the news here
The long wait for a symbol of the rupee is expected to end by March next year. A committee headed by Reserve Bank of India Deputy Governor Usha Thorat has shortlisted five symbols from 4,000 entries for a public competition to select a design for the symbol.
The announcement of the final winner is expected in January, but a finance ministry official said the process would be over by March. “RBI has given its recommendations, but it will need the approval of the finance minister as well as the Cabinet. This may take two-three months,” he said. The official, however, said a formal launch would take time

ET hindi 28 Augst 2009
विशेष संवाददाता ।। नई दिल्ली
http://hindi.economictimes.indiatimes.com/rssarticleshow/4944416.cms

I am surprised how 7 people of Jury can decide what India should use as currency symbol. This is a democratic country and we people will have to use this symbol everyday. Even if it is not possible to go in for an elaborate voting process with Indian public, they should take the help of at least say 100 to 1000 experts and professionals in arts, design, business and economy and perhaps other areas from various parts of India and get all these entries voted by them based on a SET OF CRITERIA. This way BIAS can be avoided. These experts need not be from Government organizations. They serve as volunteers in the selection process. To make matters easy this voting can happen in an online manner with all images and texts scanned. These experts should be provided online access with unique login id and password for them to access and vote. On every criteria they can give a rating of 1 to 5.

The results of the voting should be made available to Indian public anytime through this portal. Let’s propose this to Government. They should not do this selection in a non-transparent manner. We have to stop the flawed process that is going on right now immediately.

How is this idea ?

Reply

venkat December 13, 2009 at 8:55 am

And it is better they invite fresh set of applications as well.

Reply

Vaibhav December 11, 2009 at 8:13 pm

Yes It is a VERY GOOD SUGGESTION to invite entries once again from Indian citizens. It was not publicized properly earlier. In fact many people i came across came to know very late just before deadline. You need time to really think through all facets of India.

Economictimes was also misleading. It asked for voting and also invited symbols from ET readers. I am sure those who sent their symbols to editor of economictimes would have wasted their effort because they would not have been accepted by Finance ministry, as there can be no payment of Rs 500 and no synopsis and no biodata etc.

Only in economictimes it came out prominently. How many creative designers would be reading economictimes online version.
So, the whole thing was not managed properly. They should conduct it again considering the old entries while inviting new entries from all Indian citizens, including those who participated earlier.

people should write to Finance ministry to invite entries once more to be fair to all.

Reply

Vivek December 12, 2009 at 12:16 pm

I agree with Jayesh. Government should extend the deadline now inviting fresh entries. There are many people with better ideas.

Reply

Jayesh December 11, 2009 at 5:09 pm

I think people should make a demand to Finance ministry to invite one more set of entries for the sake of those who could not participate within that short time.

Reply

Jayesh December 11, 2009 at 4:29 pm

First of all they should have given enough time for people to create a symbol. People had just one month’s time(from March 6th to Apr 15th). Also, many expert designers would have come to know(if at all) only about 2 or 3 weeks later because it was not publicised thru ads. I think they should have given atleast 3 to 6 month’s time for people to think and create. By now I am sure many more people would have come out with better ideas for the symbol. I hope they don’t do a final selection in a hurry. It is better they call for and accept one more set of entries to give an opportunity for those who could not participate within that time frame.

I hope Mr.S raut has not gone into exile and he is still attached with the finance ministry.I have some questions in my mind and i hope he will give answer to the same.
1) Sir can u tell us exactly how many entries were received by your department .There is a sharp contrast in the number given by u and the the final list of eligible participants. What were the basis on which thousands of entries were discarded.By no stretch of imagination one can digest the fact that alomost more than 22,000 entries were rejected.
2)Sir, if u remember correctly all the eligible participants were supposed to give participation certificate.as per the original plan it was somewhere in jan 2010, but with so many less entries by now everybdy should have received those. Why delay?
3)When and Where all the 7 member jury sat for the selection process and what were the parameters of the selection.Has every entry been analysed thoroughly and if yes will u take the trouble to display the marks/grade each participant has received.
4)Sir, dont u think the finance ministry is little bit confused regarding the manner in which this competition is organised . I will give u one example . your guidelines say that the entry has to be in national language script or visual representation on the other hand u have told BBC and Hindustan times that it can be also in English .
5)Sir, how come Deccan Chronicle got the news of final 5 contestants even before it was available on ur website. Why not thie news available on Economic Times, Times of India and for that matter on all the newspapers where u have given the advertisements.
6)Right from the begining there were lot of doubts regarding the authenticity of this competition and due to ur careless attitude not to give explainations regarding the vague guidelines, I am 100% sure that unfortunately some will go to the court of law and u will be solely responsible for that and spoiling a beautiful project.
7)It is very clear that u have purposely kept the whole things confused and very shrudely kept in other conditions that it will be the responsibility of the winner to defednd himself in case of any dispute. Sir, normally the condition is that the decision of the jury is final and binding . u have very cleverly avoided this clause.
8)I hope u will come out with some explaination in this regard otherwise u will have a tough time in the court of law. There is nothing personal against the top 5 but they will also agree that there is a total mess w.r.t this competition

My symbol is in the link below:
http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/2944/inrsymbol.gif
You will find whatever, you suggested as part of it, and many more like Swastika symbol, King’s face used in ancient currencies, Ashok Chakra, Number 0, letters e.g, R,S,P,U,E,I etc. even र or रु, holy signs like sacred kalash and also the sign of stability along with its negotiation with foriegn currencies with the use of horizontal bar having two open arms facing upward & downward to keep up with market fluctuation and finally as a whole visual representation of an emperor with one sword facing upward in right hand to fight enemies and the other one in left hand facing downward to hole peace in his country but yet it is so simple!
I think it’s not at all complicated as it consists of 1 P, 1 O and 1 horizontal S. It is a three Stroke symbol, whereas $, £ are two stroke symbols and €, ¥ are of three strokes.
Even, this symbol can be written in a single stroke by starting from the downside of P , followed by the O in anti-clockwise direction and finally the horizontal S. Moreover, the pattern is so unique that ambiguity will never arise with other letters/ currencies/numbers even if written carelessly or in too hurry.

All the details are mentioned in the link mentioned above in the last para of this article. Please go through it for more details.

@ms inquisitive, @jay
What it means is that a symbol you are going to come up with should be easily implementable to type with standard English keyboard. One example to quote here could be that of ‘Euro’ symbol. It was not there before. But now keyboards can produce a Euro symbol with a stroke of a couple of keys.

Nice thought. We already have Rs as a UTF-8 symbol. Indian government is looking at coming up with a new symbol altogether since there are multiple countries like Nepal, Sri Lanka, Pakistan,Mauritius, Indonasia etc., using Rs as their currency symbol too. I don’t see any logic in their reasoning. Even $ symbol is being used by US, Australia, Canada etc.,

My strong feel is that we should be concentrating on strengthening the value of rupee rather than banging our head to come up with a new symbol.

@shaik jilani basha, @jilani basha

What a joke, the Indian govt. should spend a few millions and get the symbol done and put it in front of the people to choose one or ask them to draw a few for free, instead of charging money for each entry.
I am patriotic, but have no motivation to go and take a 500 rupee DD to the finance ministry and then send in my hard work to be taken over by the govt. or just thrown in the bin if not selected.
India today or at least the media it talking of all inclusive growth but the politican’s remain in their own world especially this idiot who is wanting this symbol done. Can’t believe Chidambaram is seconding this thought though.
There are a billion people who live below the poverty line and its not that they can’t think, they have better brains than myself or even the rich in India. But they can’t get noticed because of clauses like this and money making schemes of the govt. of India. If the Indian govt. can’t help them or encourage them to show case their ideas who else will. No wonder its depression in the west and majority of Indians do not want to go back to India because of this appalling state of affairs.
Feel sorry for mother India, who can never see hope and be fair to her children.
