I am happy to announce that I have joined BITS pilani to pursue my higher studies. Starting this 19th, my weekends would be productively invested towards achieving my postgraduatation. I have been approved to take admission into MS programme in Software Engineering from this premiere institute.
The duration of this course is 2 years (4 semesters) and it is being offered in collaboration with my employer Yahoo!. This is one more benefit that yahoo is offering to its employees starting this year. I am preveliged to be in the very first batch of such a collaborative program. Classes will be conducted in the office premises during weekends. It may be a bit difficult to manage work, studies and personal life. Thanks to my family members who have pledged support to realize my dream of getting masters from a renowed institution. Wish me all the best 🙂

For the papers, u need to move to BITS, the centers are available all over India, its there in Bangalore as well, i guess..
About the course material as far as my knowledge goes, i dont think they provide any material, they will just provide you the syllabus and tha names of the textbook or reference book, u need to buy it for urself and study. There is a facility of online lecture but I have no idea how much is that useful.
And about your last point, you can get it attested from any gazetted officer [org or college, anythin will do], you need not get it from ur college

I am planning to Join MS in Bits. One query I have is, if we have any backlogs in any of the semester while doing the MS, can we still proceed to the next semester(writing the backlog paper along with the other papers of next sem) or we have to complete the paper in which we have failed(by paying the whole semester) and then move to next semester? This doubt came after seeing the below comment in http://www.bits-pilani.ac.in/dlp-home/online/guidelines/guidelines.html
“In case of students having a backlog course package, IF there is any clash in the examination schedule (Date + Session) for any two courses in the prescribed course package for this semester, then the student must appear for the Regular Test/ Regular Exam for ONE of the two clashing courses, and take the Make-up Test / Make-up Exam for the other clashing course.”

Lectures are recorded. You can find them in the Bits pilani-> online lectures series-> recorded events tab.. They themselves record this…
Data structure lectures are usefull.. It will be usefull to understand concepts but applying them is altogether different thing.:):)

5)In Search by name – Enter “IS ZC361” (Without quotes)..This is course code for DSA
Click on Go.
Now you have all lectures L1-L8 for playback.
6) Click on playback and then you may choose to download the VCR file
This by default goes to C:\Documents and Settings\\My Documents\interwise\participant\Record
You can rename the VCR file as needed.Like append Course code and Lecture number to the filename.
ex: change 1345_1235.VCR to IS_ZC361-L1-1345_1235.VCR

Note you should download the VCR file and open it when connected to net so that you download other materials needed for lecture.
In Interwise participant, the bottom corner will show “Event Materials” and its download status.
Be online till it becomes “Ready to Use”.

Need not be for entire lecture duration though.
In right bottom corner, You will see Event Materials: Downloading – (a progressing green bar) ..Once the material download completes , you will see all green and ready to use.
This means materials are downloaded to your computer and now you should be able to see the slides (video) along with the audio part.

I think its on september u can check out that from theirofficial website evry thing will be clearly updated in their (BITS WILP) site i guess..
regarding procedures from ur end keep all ur marksheets right from 10th to degree certificate (even semester mark sheets)copies with attestation readily.. keep 1500 rs to be sent as D.D to buy application form. The name or which the D.D has to be taken and the adress to which it has to be sent all will be updated in their site… i have used DTDC corier service they r having seperate delivery branch to pilani i guess. after veryfying ur profile bits will get back to by saying whether u got selected or not for the course. keep ur experienc certificate also ready (u must been employeed for atleast one year.. i thnik u migh be knowing the eligibilty conditiongns…) and if u selected for the course they will asku to pin point a mentor who shld have an M.S already or any masters with 6 years of industry experience.. find out such person in prior before joining.. i think as of now this detail is more than enough.. hope other friends also will help u…

What I actually wanted to know is after i download the form from their site once it is available in the site, what all do I need to send to BITS, along with the DD? Marksheet, experience certificate and all other stuffs, i need to send at that time only ?
And how long does BITS take to post the confirmation, is it like a week’s time after the form has been dispatched to them and once the confirmation comes from their end, what all I need to do from my end, i mean how do I pay the fees and all ???

From the application form, you can find details of demand draft.

From organisation , you need approval for doing higher studies even
if they do not support financially or do not have tie up with BITS
(3)
You need to find a suitable mentor – Mentor qualifications you can find from
the application.
But mostly someone with Masters & expereinced / someone done a higher degree in BITS
If you switch company, you need to get approval from new company and also if you change mentor
intimate BITS immediately .
They should have a procedure for this.
But preferably stick on to same company and mentor unless you are sure that the other company supports this kind
of higher studies.

When you register you will get a application form and a number.
This registration/app number is very important for all your future intimation with bits.
You can track your application status etc through this number.

Once you get admission, you will be getting an offer letter to print and also course choices.
You can check the list of course choices from the current sem.
Because for all 3 sems 4 being dissertation you need to choose all electives during the first sem admission itself.
So you can do enough research and decide on the courses.
Ensure that you all see your sem course handouts- for changes in topics/ text books etc. do not buy books till you register
and get your course handouts.

it might take few weeks for them might be around 3 weeks to 4 to process ur stuffs and tell u a concrete reply… the thing is u have to note down the application number of urs and keep it with u safe ly.. daily heck in their site for ur approval status… after u get the offer u have to download ur admission letter and have to send a D.D for (45k in total )15 k for admission and 30k for first semester .icici or sbi would be a better option along with the admission letter signed by u and DD you have to choose the first semester subjects.. and sign in that print out also and again corier it as u had did for the previous.. again u have to check the fees recieved status in their site… once the status shows received u can start preparation for u r exams…
these r the things which i did

2) Second point talks about the powers given to deemed universities like IITs, IIsc, NITs etc hence same with BITS. Only difference between BITS with other examples that I just mentioned is of Private and Public. That is, BITS has its own source of funding or raise funds/earn incomes on its own. But others in my examples got a large amount of funding from Indian govt.
I know about this autonomy(functional nature) of deemed universities by virtue of my family background and information available in world wide web.
3) About the third, it a matter of encountering more(each and every for 100%)successful experiences of the people went through this mode of higher education. I might only be able to give you two example, but in due course if I found more will post here as well on my blog.
3.1) One of my ex manager affirmed the recognition of this degree in institutes of higher education, specifically, IITs. He went through MS in SS.
3.2) My program co-coordinator on behalf of BITS pilani mentioned that BITS has never encountered any negative response to the MS off campus degree holder by virtue of this mode of education.
I hope it may help to justify my previous post.

The Council noted that the Distance Education Council has been receiving various requests from the Universities offering programmes through distance mode for Ex- Post Facto approval of the programmes which the universities have been offering prior to the commencement of the process of recognition and sometimes even prior to the establishment of the DEC. The members observed that the Universities have been requesting the DEC that the students who have obtained their qualifications from these universities are facing problem in getting employment in the light of Gazette Notification no: 44 of 1995 issued by MHRD on 1-3-95, which mandates the recognition of the DEC for these qualifications to be eligible for central govt. jobs
The case of BITS Pilani was discussed in detail as the nomenclature of the programmes offered by the BITS did not match the nomenclature of programmes prescribed by the UGC. However the Council observed that BITS Pilani is one of quality conscious and reputed institutions of the country. The Council further observed that the students who had obtained their degrees after enrolling in BITS Pilani for its Work Integrated Learning programmes are facing difficulty in the light of the Gazette notification no 44 of MHRD dated 1.3.1995. The Council decided to accord ex-post facto approval to BITS Pilani for the period 1995 to 2007 as an exceptional one time measure. The Council also decided to keep the application of BITS Pilani for regular recognition in abeyance till such time the BITS Pilani changes its nomenclature of the programmes or UGC includes these programmes in its specified list of degrees.

VU displays old sem lecture notes.
Do we have to start with just books and these lecture notes.

PG courses are always good if you are hungry for more knowledge and to gain expertise on a selected subject. So, it depends on how you take it!

I doubt that.. atleast we were told that if we get an E grade in any of the subject, we have to pay full semester fee.

Actually i have applied for the course “BS in Engineering Technology” under WILP and i got the confirmation letter for admission. My organization does not have any collaboration with BITS.
Here i wanted to know that is this course Engineering Technology a better option for me, while i am into embedded field?
Also i would like to ask you all, what are the approvals/accreditations available for the BS in Engineering Technology course.
I am in so much of confusion, as i am unable to decide.
Also i would like to ask you all whether AMIE a better option than BITS BSET?
Please assist me…

To be very honest I am not pretty mucha aware of Engg Technology branch, but what I do know is any course under WILP is not AICTE approved [anyone correct me if I am wrong ]. Since you have done your diploma, my suggestion for you would be to go for a full time graduation course, rather than WILP, if you are planning to do your masters later, you can always go for MS from BITS. Give a thought and then decide.
As far as your other questions are concerned, I hope someone will get back to you shortly.

Currently am doing my MMSE, class room based program.
What is the major differnce between MSSE and MSSS , which applying for a job, or further education ?
Can i do my Phd using this MSSE certificate in any other universities?

Hi Jagadeesh,
Thanks for visiting my blog and for your comment. Both SS & SE are more or less the same except that SE gives more importance for software applications applications where as SS gives equal importance to applications and implementation of these applications at hardware level.
Since this distance learning programme is not AICTE approved, many universities might not allow you to do Phd. However, you can do Phd from BITS 🙂

Hi Umakanta, sorry for the delayed reply. My thoughts are very much inline with what sumit has commented in reply to you. I don’t have much details about AMIE.
One the second thought, going for a graduation is any time better than simply sticking to a Diploma.

Ya i can understand that you are working for the last 2 years and suddenly switching to a full time course will be a bit odd in all respects, but still you know if you are going for a work integrated graduation course, it may not help you in the long run, because any time someone with a full time graduation degree will always be given more weightage, i guess. And ofcourse you should take into account the approvals also, it does matter.
Anyways its up to you, think about the pros and cons properly and then go for a decision.

I have few suggestions to you since I came across similar path..You can do AMIE..Thats teh better option than full time degree since you are working.After AMIE you can go for MS in Bits.
I have done Diploma and completed AMIE along with work.Now planning to go for MS in BITS. AMIE is not that so easy to clear than full time degree..You need to dedicate full efforts..Evaluation is little strict ..I have seen many ppl given up this in between ..If you have a wish and ready for hardwork AMIE can easily complete in 3yrs time(even 2.5yrs also).

My employer has a tie up with BITS. But the scenario out here is a bit different, they will only provide the info that I am a bonafide employee of the organisation. I need to do everything myself starting from admission procedure, fees payment etc. No lectures in the premises as well. Only when I am done with my course successfully, I can either go for the reimbursement or a 1 year bond.
The question which I have is , in such a case if I leave my employer in between the course, does my course become void or I can still pursue it with my new employer, ofcouse with a new mentor as well ?
If anyone following the blog also could help me with the answer, that would be really great…

Well, in such tie up related cases, it is better to do it as an individual. However, if you are having a long tenure goals with your current employer, then you can go with your employer sponsoring the course. If you leave the organization which has a tie up or some kind of association with BITS, as far as i know, you will not be allowed to continue the course. You would be required to start afresh.

For all the in campus programs, the placements would be good AFAIK. But not sure, please check with BITS.
