Know your PF account balance online

Finally the wait is over to know your Employee Provident Fund (EPF) account balance. After 2 years of initial announcement to make the account information online, EPFO India has finally delivered something. As per the official note released by the PF department on July 1st of 2011, a valid active account holder will know the balance up to the date. Their claim is that all the accounts are updated for certain circles across country, which also includes the latest approved transactions of settlement/advances/transfer-in/transfer-out, if any.

This data was made initially available for Delhi (North), Delhi (South), Laxmi Nagar (Delhi), Gurgaon, Faridabad, Karnal and Bangalore. Right now PF account balance data is made available for 119 offices across India. Remaining offices records will be made available online soon as per the info on their site.

In order to know your PF account details, follow these simple steps:

  • Visit the site http://www.epfindia.com/MembBal.html
  • Select the EPFO office where your account is maintained
  • Furnish your PF Account number in the online form.
  • Leave the extension field blank, in case your account does not have one.
  • You will be asked to enter your name and mobile number.
  • The given mobile number will be recorded along with the PF Account Number.
  • On successful submission of above information, the details will be sent through SMS to the given mobile number.

I tried these steps to get my balance yesterday. First couple of successful submissions went nowhere! I didn’t get any response. Today I was lucky upon trying for the third time! I got the SMS in about 1 hour after filling the details online. Sadly, as on today the account balance reflects the data only till 31st March 2008. We may have to wait for some more time (few more years?) to know the latest balance.

    i applied for transfer of my pf amount from my old (bellary) account to new ( banglore) account on december 2010, but still now cont get any feedback from the responsible persons all r telling like definitely it will come

    i have some doubts about pf claiming…. present im out of my X company… i worked one year for company X and now i joined in Y company…so the Y company asking me the old pf no for transfrng the account…i have my pf no as TN/xxxxx/xxx…. but in the new pf web site it’s asking as establishment code/ext code/account no… then which one is the original pf no and which one should i give in my present company… i have only the no as TN/xxxxx/xxx…. and how can i know the transfer is successful and how can i know the balance in my a/c… my old pf circle is chennai and new one will be bombay

    • Provide the number as is in your payslips of previous company. If in doubt, check with HRs as needed to get clarification. Usually transfer takes about 45 days is what I know from my experience of opting for transfer. Your new employer should be able to confirm if the transfer is complete or not after that period.

  9. Ex-employee of Artech submitted withdrawal forms as against PF a/c no: DL-xxxxx/1654 were submitted in May 2011 to Delhi South PF range office. Yet unable to see info updated…why so..
    Shows as ‘ No Record Found ‘ …
    On a humorous note, it appears as though the database will be updated after i/we receive our claim credit into my/our Sb account(s) …… :))
    Then what is the use of this online feature, when there are so many issues and someone somewhere hardly seems to care much about setting these issues right

    • Bangalore has 3 or 4 PF offices. Bangalore central being the main office for which the PF data is available online. For other branches including KR puram branch data has not been published online ..

  13. it doesnt really work for me. I have tried all possible combinations.and my pf no starts with KN/… (i just checked my salary slip for last month)

    error says
    Invalid Member_id / Data not updated against this

    looks like some people’s data are still not updated.

  15. first of all Thanks for sharing this information. :).

    SMS from EPFO shows 2 amounts i.e. EE and ER amounts. ER amount is aprox 50% less of EE amount.. Do you have any idea about what EE and ER stands for and how calculations are done for those two categories?
    2nd thing is, does the amount shown in SMS include interest too???

    • Sudhanshu – I assume EE stands for Employee Contribution while ER stands for Employer Contribution. Not sure of interest part though!

    • UT – Thank you! I have put up this info in the best interest of wider audience who can get some self service done. I can’t keep on repeating the same stuff which I have written in the article everytime to every other comment.     My PF A/c starts with HR/GGN/****/****.

    Do you know if the services for my circle has been started?

    I tried to know my balance by selecting HR/FBD/…. but it says invalid id!

    When I submit my details, I get the following message:

    STATUS for Member ID: HR/FBD/xxxx//xxxxxx

    Invalid Member_id / Data not updated against this HR/FBD/xxxx//xxxxxx

    **Data updated till 30-06-2011 11:35:06

    What does it mean?
    – Can it be wrong account no?
    – Is it possible that company did not paid my PF amount?

    Is it Faridabad office or Karnal office?

    & also in the site it mentiones as BG/BNG something but in sal slip it is KN.

    Would be helpful if u can let me know what should we enter here.plz give proper guidence.

    • Vipul, I assume EE stands for Employee Contribution while ER stands for Employer Contribution. Not sure about the Interest part. Considering the SMS that I got from PF dept, I doubt if that amount is inclusive of the interest component.

  29. Glad to hear about the line epfindia.com/MembBal.html but to my surprise it’s the most pathetic site I ever saw in my life, very poor and unprofessional design.
    On the first click itself it say “Service is temporarly unavailable” hahaha… hats off to Public Sector and their unskilled employees. I’m wondering whoever has designed this site, seriously need to learn how to secure user information at the very first place. I bet this site would be hacked very easily provided it works :).

    As an advice, keeping in view the phising attacks these day, I urge user to be cautious to enter their personal details on this unsecured website. Otherwise your personal information is at risk along with Poor EPF database whatever they have created…lolz

    • Shveta, follow the link provided above. It is self explanatory from there on. You need to know in which office of Delhi your PF account is maintained.

    My PF account number is mentioned as KN/WF/xxxxx/xxxx in my pay slip. i am trying to check balance but i am getting error message like below.

    STATUS for Member ID: BG/BNG/xxxxx//xxxx
    Invalid Member_id / Data not updated against this BG/BNG/xxxxx/xxxx
    **Data updated till 30-06-2011 21:22:50

    i am not able to replace BG/BNG/ as KN/WF please guide me.

    • Ashok, now it is the new format of BG/BNG don’t worry about it. If you are getting that error, it means either the circle for which you are trying to access data is not ready yet.

    I think I’m still not clear on the answer for the question that is already asked.
    Where do I find the PF balance for the PF accounts starts with KN/BN/XXXXX/xxxxxx??
    My account is in KR Puram office as well. But not sure how to check the balance online.

  40. my PF transfer application is with KR puram office, both my previous employer and my current employer had asked me to get it done from my end.
    I have a scanned copy of the Form 13 which has seal from EPFO KRPURAM dated April 25 2011, obtained through my previous employer. How long does it take to complete the transfer ? Is there a way to get this done without actually going to PF office ?

    The site seems to be not working, they have launched it without testing It seems to me.
    I have checked with my all friends in Bangalore, nut every one’s ID is Invalid.

    • Prashant as one of the reader has pointed out already, probably your account might be maintained at KR puram branch. I can’t deny the fact that the account details may not be updated completely.

    • Hi Manjunath, BG/BNG is the new format replacing the KN part as you have pointed out. You just have to select appropriate circle where the PF account is maintained, BG/BNG is automatically populated.

    • I got the sane error incorrect ID, later I chose KRPURAM for whitefield instead of bangalore then it provided me the info and i got a txt with info within a min or so however the info was updated till Sep 2010
