Know your PF account balance online

Finally the wait is over to know your Employee Provident Fund (EPF) account balance. After 2 years of initial announcement to make the account information online, EPFO India has finally delivered something. As per the official note released by the PF department on July 1st of 2011, a valid active account holder will know the balance up to the date. Their claim is that all the accounts are updated for certain circles across country, which also includes the latest approved transactions of settlement/advances/transfer-in/transfer-out, if any.

This data was made initially available for Delhi (North), Delhi (South), Laxmi Nagar (Delhi), Gurgaon, Faridabad, Karnal and Bangalore. Right now PF account balance data is made available for 119 offices across India. Remaining offices records will be made available online soon as per the info on their site.

In order to know your PF account details, follow these simple steps:

  • Visit the site http://www.epfindia.com/MembBal.html
  • Select the EPFO office where your account is maintained
  • Furnish your PF Account number in the online form.
  • Leave the extension field blank, in case your account does not have one.
  • You will be asked to enter your name and mobile number.
  • The given mobile number will be recorded along with the PF Account Number.
  • On successful submission of above information, the details will be sent through SMS to the given mobile number.

I tried these steps to get my balance yesterday. First couple of successful submissions went nowhere! I didn’t get any response. Today I was lucky upon trying for the third time! I got the SMS in about 1 hour after filling the details online. Sadly, as on today the account balance reflects the data only till 31st March 2008. We may have to wait for some more time (few more years?) to know the latest balance.

    1. What is the cost & process of filing an RTI (My data is not uploaded sine more than a year). What information should I mention in the RTI. Who should I address RTI to .. I cant find any CPIO for KR Puram’s office bangalore.

    2. Can we expect a statement of all EPF credits (monthly and interest) ?

    3. Is this deduction for pension applicable for all subscribers ? When is the payout done ? Will I start receiving pension after 10 years or so ? How do I track this amount ?

    4. In my previous company, EPF a/c was not for government but company trust. I found that I’m paying double of what company contributed in EPF. How can I find where did the pension go or is it that they are not bound to make equal contribution ?

    I got my EPF balance via SMS just now and it shows EE Amt: Rs. 82282 and ER Amt: Rs. 30370 (accounts updated upto 31-03-2011). I am bit confused with the ER amt, that is employer contribution, can you please clarify the figures to me via mail, it would be helpful to me. Thanks so much for your help.

    I would really appreciate if anyone can help me in this. I am located in New Delhi and worked with an organization for (16 July 09 to 30 Nov 2010). As per the organization my PF office is Maharastra (Mumbai, Bandra). My seniors told me that I’ll get total amt of somewhere near 15k. Contribution was made by Employee & Employer Rs 432 each, I checked my PF Online balance and its confusing. their was EE and ER. Combining both the amount is half of what i am expecting.I got SMS from EPFO office on 12/05/2011 about processing But still i did not get amount in my account, Can anyone tell me how much should i get & how many days it will take?
    Any assistance rendered will be highly appreciated.

    I m looking for my PF status but i m not getting any response… Neither onlinen or on my Mobile …. I was supposed to get my PF amount in Sept.. But it’s being two months no response on my mobile or my Account ,,.. Please help me or guide mee..

  7. Sir,
    I got VRS in 2007 but I received in 2009 far less amount than I think I should have received.On Line Query shows my account as settled.On verification I found that a big amount I transferred from my another account has not been credited by EPFO to my this account.What should I do and please clarify whether I will get interest for the balance amount from the period 2007 onwards.

  8. I am getting the following msg “Invalid Member_id / Data not updated against this BG/BNG/12345//1234” ….PF number printed in my Salary sleep is KNBN/12345/1234…..here 12345 and 1234 is virtual number but number of digit is correct

  10. Hi Mohan, I have tried several times the way you have mentioned, for my first organization, I am able to get the details, its with TN/XXXXX/XXXXXX. Now for my second organization, they have code: KN/BN/XXXXX/XXXX. I am getting a the following message: Invalid Member_id / Data not updated against this BG/BNG/XXXX/XXXX.

    Can you help me out with this? Do I need to contact them ? If yes, then which center?

    Nice bit of info there. I recently got my EPF payment under process sms. I called up the pf office (they actually picked up the phone and spoke to me!) – after 15 tries. they said its gonna take 10 more days :-/. And you know what ? I was with IBM earlier and the IBM guys in the pf office are on leave most of the time! Also the AO is NEVER at his desk. He’s roaming around and u have to catch him and request him to work! :-/. God knows when the PF dept will smile on me! 8-P

    As i am able to check my PF balance online and i have submitted my PF withdrawal form to my old company, but unable to find the claim status.

    and second thing is EE amount and is included with annual interest or will get at a time of withdrawing.

    I would really appreciate if anyone can help me in this. I am located in pune and worked with an organization (call center) for nine months(14 DEC 09 to 28 Sept 2010).     was wondering if you could help. i have quit my previous job and joined a new co. i had initiated for pf transfer from my old co. but now i have received a cheque for the pf accumulated, stating that they have closed my prev account. tax has not been deducted since i have been holding the account for several years. i have not encashed the cheque. is it possible for me to get this amount transferred to my present pf account?

  18. Dear Mohan, my Pf no is py/bom/xxxxx/xxx its almost year now, whenever i cross check in online it is showing under processing, I don’t no how much more days will it take to reimburse. can you tell me with your experience what it means because its not acceptable same from past .

  20. Hi All, a gentle reminder once again. I cannot provide your PF account balance info if you post the pf number etc., I am sharing the links that I have come across various PF offices across the country for your self service.       Just wanted to check if we can know the name of the acccount holder,the company he was working with etc in case if we have only the PF A/c no.

      • I had been to the Regional PF Office this morning to enquire & was told to Wait as they are too busy with System Migration and no updates can be provided.

        When informed that I might be travelling was asked to send an e-mail for any Clarification or Query. I just want to know the Turnaroung time as I got a message saying Pavement approved for Process & Can you confirm Form 19 & 10C pavement single or separate mode of pavement. Can you advise!

        when I Checked in website for PF Balance its shows “Your account has been settled. For detail’s please contact respective EPF Office”

  22. I got a message saying My PF amount has been approved. Can you let me know how long does this process takes & will form 19 & 10 amount to be credited separately & any possibility of NEFT as I have provided my Salary Account Bank details while filling the form. please suggest.

    • Try this,

      KN/XXXXX/XXXX is old pf accounts you need to do the following to check your account balance.

      After selecting the state click on KN – BANGALORE BG BNG BANGALORE, Enter deatails as below.
      BG BNG XXXXX BLANK XXXXX, You will receive a message on your mobile.

          Even my PF no is KN/XXXXX/XXX but it got changed to BG/BNG/ I tried this option as mentioned…but still doesn’t work and shows invalid id/data not updated against BG/BNG/… anyother option we can try ?

          • I faced the same problem. After selecting the state (“KARNATAKA”) i chooes BANGALORE, i got the same errior as mentioned by you.

            Then i select KRPURAM WHITEFIELD, and it works.

            So please try KRPURAM WHITEFIELD or other listed options.

    Two days back i have received a message form EPFO and they stated that the amount is approved and payment is in process.How many days it will take for this process and when i can expect the money in my account.

    I have selected a option on check in the form will i receive a cheque to my address or it will credited directly to my account.

  26. How to know whether my EPF Account is active or not? Because after i left the job before 3 years and joined back just now… And Shall i continue the EPF with the Same Account Number which i had… Please suggest me what to do… My EE amt is Rs.4151 & my ER Amt is 1268 as on 08/09/2011….

  27. My name is Ruheena Banu i was an ex-employee of First Source. I have applied for PF in March 2011. But i dint get the amount till now . I did went to PF office and found that they said its Maharashtra office so they cant check the status they told to to acess website http://www.epfindia.com i did acess that i got to know the amount which is around EE = 8767 and ER =2679 which is not true if it is including employers contribution also. I did call maharashtra office phone number but it is continously ringing no response, I dont even have the acknowledgement number. Am very annoyed i dont know what to do. Please check and let me know as soon as possible.

    Need some advice for PF withdrawal.

    I worked for 2 organizations in past as below:

    Organization #1: worked here for nearly 4 years between 2004 and Apr 2009.

    Organization #2: Joined Apr 2009, requested to transfer my PF from Organization #1 to PF account of Organization #2. The Organization #1 issued a cheque on 17 Dec 2009 on the name of my second org #2. After long delay finally Org #2 also submitted my papers to the local EPFO office in Jul 2010 for the PF transfer and received an acknowledgement from local EPFO office as well.

    Now problem is that even till date this PF transfer has not been completed. I have lodged several grievances through EPFO website but no one is responding although they are responding on other queries so I am sure they are receiving my emails.

    I also inquired with my Organization #1 thinking I might have accumulated some interest since Apr 2009 on this PF amount. But they said, since account was closed from their end, no interest will be accumulated so I am kind of in very big lose due to all this delay.

    Is it possible to recover interest or anything from my organization #1 or claim it from org #2 or EPFO?

    I am bit lost at the moment and not able to decide what to do next. I think of withdrawing the PF amount from last two organizations but I am not sure if EPFO will tax this amount or not.

    If withdrawal is taxable then should I transfer PF 1 & 2 to my current 3rd organization?

    Can someone please guide me?

    I have received the following details through SMS:
    EPF Balance in A/c No……..is EE Amt Rs.12,940, ER Amt 4477 as on 9/9/11 (A/c updated upto 31/3/2010) – EPFO.
    EE Rs.12,940 + ER Amt Rs. 4477 = 17414
    Is this the balance as on 9/9/11 or 31/3/2010? Why is it mentioned in bracket that account upted upto 31/3/2010. Does it mean that a further amount is to be added to the total of Rs.17414 for the period 1/4/2010 to 31/3/2011 and from 1/4/2011 to July 2011 as I left the company in July 2011.

    I’m really confused, please clarify the above.

    I have initiated a PF transfer in Jan 2009, it seems that it got rejected to my previous org. in july 2010, after which my previous org have not sent it back to the pf office. I then requested for a pf withdrawal in June 2011. the status was showing “withdrawal in progress”, suddenly on 2nd Jan 2012, it is saying that the transfer ( form 13) is approved. How is it possible.

    • Dear Mr. Chaurasia – as the message says, the payment will be made through a Cheque and it wont be a direct fund transfer. Better check with PF office on the estimated time of this transfer completion.

    When i chek my PF balance amount it reflect 2 amount in sms. e.g. EPF Balance in A\C No. DS/NHP/xxxxxxx/xxx/xxxxxxxx is EE Amt:Rs20375,ER Amt:Rs 6384 as on 06-09-11(Accounts updated upto 31-03-2011)
    Can you tell me Difference between EE Amt:Rs20375 and EE Amt:Rs20375.
    How much amount i will get and from where i get ? at the time submission of my PF form i gave one cancel check along with PF form in my X Office.

    The website is really helpful in getting the EPF balance through SMS. Thanks for the same. I have let my old organization a year back and have rejoined the same 6 months back. I was with a different company in between that 6 months time. Now How can I claim my old EPF balance. Would I get the same within 3 months or Can I transfer the same to my new PF account, if yes what is the procedure Need to know why EE balance is more and ER balance is very less when both the contributions are equal from my employer

  41. Hi, I got difference in EE and ER amount, could you please clarify me this. I got sms message in my mobile from EPFO Bathinda where EE amt:Rs 9665, ER Amt:Rs 2955 as on 07/9/11 I got two check in SBP, amount one is Rs 13219 and another is 5304 total amount I got after working for fifteen month is Rs (13219+5304)=18523.please healp me or guide me the difference in EE and ER amount I got .     I have applied for PF withdrawl. The amount which got credit to my account is less than the amount I should get. Starting 2008 my contribution towards PF was 1140 per month for 28 months. After that starting from May 2010 my contribution was 1500 per month till july 2011 for 15 months. If I consider my contribution and employee contribution as same then the total amount sums up to 108840. But I got 113054. Also my company HR told me that my total amount was 148000. Now i dont understand the calculation. Can some one please show me insight on this ?

    Your blog is very helpful to get info on EPF account balance. Looks like EPFO has extended the facility to 119 offices as of today.

    I was able to get my EPF account balance from EPFO Chennai on SMS, however there seems to be some discrepancy. ER amount is lesser than EE amount. As per my salary break up both should be same. (I.e. employer and myself contribute the same amount). I left this company a year back and since then on my own business, but did not apply for closure of EPF account so far. How do I sort out this variation in ER and EE amounts?

    Also, after joining the last company, I have submitted application for transferring the previous PF balance to the last employers (at Chennai PF Office), but looks like my latest PF balance does not show the credits in my account (maintained at Bommasandra PF office). I had checked online to get the old PF balance from Bommasandra PF office, but the response says “Your account has been settled”. Any suggestion as to how to trace the amount mentioned as settled?

    • Hi Emmanuvel,

      Usually employer contribution does not get reflected in your account directly as some companies do deposit it for the whole organization which gets reflected to you after you claim it.

      Also some portion of it goes for pension scheme which usually does not reflect in your individual balance.
      Get Form 10 filled from your organization along with a statement -which will show the contributions and you can see the total amount.

      Submit it and claim it from PF office.

    • While entire EE (12%) goes into your PF account, ER gets split into two. 8.33% goes to your PF account and remaining 3.67% goes to your EPS account (Employees’ Pension scheme). So even though your package says both employee (EE) and employer (ER) contribution is same (12%), on the PF account ER will always show less than EE.
