BITS pilani : Pursuing higher studies

I am happy to announce that I have joined BITS pilani to pursue my higher studies. Starting this 19th, my weekends would be productively invested towards achieving my postgraduatation. I have been approved to take admission into MS programme in Software Engineering from this premiere institute.

The duration of this course is 2 years (4 semesters) and it is being offered in collaboration with my employer Yahoo!. This is one more benefit that yahoo is offering to its employees starting this year. I am preveliged to be in the very first batch of such a collaborative program. Classes will be conducted in the office premises during weekends. It may be a bit difficult to manage work, studies and personal life. Thanks to my family members who have pledged support to realize my dream of getting masters from a renowed institution. Wish me all the best 🙂

    • you would have got the lectures from Bits. I am also doing MSMM I just got all the books shipped from india. Some how indian editions are cheaper.
      Where is your exam center dude only few days for exams ask someone in india to send it by post dont wait

      1. The prime criteria is 1 yr wrk exp, so u have tht wid u and remaining all are just formalities, nothin as such… I guess u can apply in this October.

      2. No tests/interviews

      They have mentioned each and every points Please read it.

      Along with that if you read this blog many people have already answered this query many times. It be great to read few parts of blogs sometimes 🙂 .

          Naah, i dont think so, i guess the advertisement for October admission would be available in sometym in September , coz I myself have taken admission in last October.
          Advise u to keep an eye on their site for all the updates . U can click on the Admission Tab in their home page and it will tell u the next admission cycle.

    I am a Diploma holder in Electronics Engineering and I have 15 years experience. I am planing to pursue BS-IS from Bits. Please advise if the program has been approved by UGC/NAAC/AICTE. Will I be able to do MBA in some other University after the course completion. The mail objective of doing this course is to take an MBA now. So could anyone suggest any alternative lateral entry to MBA program

      If MBA is your main goal then i am sorry to say you are in wrong page. Why you want do BS in information science and then MBA?.
      I rather advice you do bachelour degree in management and go for MBA. Since you have 15 years exp i would be better to go for integerated management program which might help you finish MBA degree early.

      But doing an BS and then MBA def make no sense.

          Since you have 15 years of exp, i guess Executive MBA from Symbiosis will be a very good option for you . I think there is a distant version of the same course as well. U can google and refer their site for all relevant information.

        Before Applying to this course,chieck out my previous comment on Accreditation..
        Being a Famous Organisation,They didnt get approval for this course.Dont Waste your money on this..Until other otherwise you get assured from them this course is approved.They will say Approval is in process. But Think From 2008 to till date,they didnt get any approval

  16. Glad that I got into this blog, great thanks to the contributors.

    I am trying to gain admn into BITS MS Software systems and wanted to confirm whether this degree is UGC or atlease DEC approved. Now, I called up BITS WILP division and he said “Yes, it is UGC and DEC approved” to what I have asked. I don’t know if I could believe the person whom I spoke, I see a lot many comments in this blog saying that BITS WILP is not UGC approved. I visited UGC officer and he said distance learning programmes are not taken care by UGC and better to consult DEC. I tried contacting DEC, they did not attend the phone call(seems like a typical govt office in India). Please help, as I expect my higher degrre(MS SS) be recognised as a P.G degree any where in India/abroad.

      • Well , honestly i am not sure whether BITS MS is UGC approved or not (Its too late for me think as i have already completed my degree :)).

        But i think BITS degree is recognized by many companies in India. Well don’t go with my words do a bit of research. In distance learning i guess BITS offer quality education than most of other universities. Otherwise you need to go for full time. But i think to be honest all i have seen working with Russians, Israelis, Germans degree really is an entry point rest all knowledge that matters. If you know what you are doing no matter where you go your skills will be recognizedly.

Can anyone help me by sharing the information about this course; Will this course just give me a degree or will be eligible for any bonus ,career path,benefits?

    • Hi Radhika,

      I have recently completed my MS from BITS pilani. It does adds value addition, however bonus benefits all depends on your employer. For instance my employer in New Zealand really don’t care if i have Master or PHD since here they see how many years of programming exp you have. If you have say 15 years programming exp or say 20 then thats helps. But some firm prefer MS or PHD degree involving research or more sophisticated software work. But in short yes having a degree from BITS is great.

      • Hello Darshan,

        Well doing an MS from bits wont land you to any particular role automatically. You need to understand few things here and clear some misconceptions.

        Lot of people believe doing MS degree land them in better pay or better role well agreed partially to some extent if your job demands you to get MS or PHD.

        If you are planing to continue your role as programmer then MS is really not important unless you are getting in to research oriented thing.
        I have done my MS from BITS but my employer feels to be programmer you dont need MS but i did for my own satisfaction to have one computer degree(I have done my BS in electronics)

    I thought of doing MS SS in BITS.But after reading the below from the link given in the comments that i doubt this course will just mere be a degree and not eligible for any bonus ,career path,benefits.Then can anyone justify me why to do this course?
    I am in dilema.whether to do or not?

    The Council noted that the Distance Education Council has been receiving various requests from the Universities offering programmes through distance mode for Ex- Post Facto approval of the programmes which the universities have been offering prior to the commencement of the process of recognition and sometimes even prior to the establishment of the DEC. The members observed that the Universities have been requesting the DEC that the students who have obtained their qualifications from these universities are facing problem in getting employment in the light of Gazette Notification no: 44 of 1995 issued by MHRD on 1-3-95, which mandates the recognition of the DEC for these qualifications to be eligible for central govt. jobs.
    The case of BITS Pilani was discussed in detail as the nomenclature of the programmes offered by the BITS did not match the nomenclature of programmes prescribed by the UGC. However the Council observed that BITS Pilani is one of quality conscious and reputed institutions of the country. The Council further observed that the students who had obtained their degrees after enrolling in BITS Pilani for its Work Integrated Learning programmes are facing difficulty in the light of the Gazette notification no 44 of MHRD dated 1.3.1995. The Council decided to accord ex-post facto approval to BITS Pilani for the period 1995 to 2007 as an exceptional one time measure. The Council also decided to keep the application of BITS Pilani for regular recognition in abeyance till such time the BITS Pilani changes its nomenclature of the programmes or UGC includes these programmes in its specified list of degrees.

    Do we have to mention about that in a seperate page (asked in the application to mention if there are any gaps)..But this is not a break in the course ..

    • I guess they have mentioned it 1 year working experiance till 31st May 2011.

      You can apply for same course in Dec/ Jan.

    • Exam center is Nellai Nadar Matric School at Thiruvanmiyur. No contact sessions for Software systems, all sessions are online thru Virtual classrooms.

    I want to pursue MS in Quality Management in Bits Pilani Distance learning program. I’m aware that the admissions will open in April 2011. But i wanted to know what is the value of the degree?

    Also in the web page, it says Quality management will have mandatory contact session in first and second sem. What will be the timings of these sessions? Will it be full day for 2 weeks ? As i’m working in IT attending 2 full weeks will be difficult for me.

    Do let me know, if anyone knows about it.
