I am happy to announce that I have joined BITS pilani to pursue my higher studies. Starting this 19th, my weekends would be productively invested towards achieving my postgraduatation. I have been approved to take admission into MS programme in Software Engineering from this premiere institute.
The duration of this course is 2 years (4 semesters) and it is being offered in collaboration with my employer Yahoo!. This is one more benefit that yahoo is offering to its employees starting this year. I am preveliged to be in the very first batch of such a collaborative program. Classes will be conducted in the office premises during weekends. It may be a bit difficult to manage work, studies and personal life. Thanks to my family members who have pledged support to realize my dream of getting masters from a renowed institution. Wish me all the best 🙂

Hi All,
I requested my ex-manager (still with our company) to be my mentor. He was astonised by the clauses under ‘Information to Mentor’, which read-’…Mentor might have to allocate 4-6 hrs per week….Mentor will have to meet 3 times a week with the student…Mentor has to be with Student for Seminar/VIVA…etc’. Is it true that Mentor needs to spend so many hours with the Student? Is it not ok if i just keep him informed about my progress so that he can know that i am completing my assignments on time? Also i would like to know if we can change Mentor(without changing organisation) mid-way through the course? Can we change the Mailing address mid-way through the course? (looks like a silly question 🙁 …anyway)
Thanks and Regards,
Seeni

@bharti
Well, the mentor is to help out the students as and when they need any assistance wrt subject topics and their usage in real time project work. Mentor concept exists for distance learning, but in my case it is a collaborative learning in association with my employer. Hence we don’t have the concept of a ‘Mentor’ here.
@Seeni
Thanks for sharing the information about the course enrollment notification.

Both are not equal for sure. But the standarads at which BITS conducts the course certainly has better value than any other university in India. This is mainly because of the kind of course material they device and this is always in sync with the prevailing industry standards.
@Suyog
Please check with bits and I have provided the link on which you can directly get in touch with BITS in comment # 23.

Thanks for reply, can u please clear me one more question that the Distance learning MS will equally be valueable like full time?
Mohan says
@Bharti
For collaboration courses, 1 year experience is a must as far as my knowledge is concerned. That too my strong assumption is that the employer imposes that 1 year experience filter. For all the information wrt admission and to get your other queries pls contact bits directly . Admission notification is expected in the month of April.

As long as you have 60%+ through your 10th to graduation, lost 1 year should not matter. However, please check with BITS by following the link mentioned above.

Hi Mohan.. Like others i would like to thank you for this wonderful blog.
I wanted to join the MS Software Systems course in last semester, but could not as i was out of country. Going through the forms to be submitted, i found that they ask for earlier acamedics as well. I dont have a great acads history, as i lost 1 year. Would this affect my chances of getting thru ?
I am a BE comp with 5 years ex.

It is not a must for your company to have tie up with BITS for you to continue your studies. You can still apply for BITS distance learning programme and study MS. For more details on this, check out BITS site as mentioned in comment # 26 above.
All the best for your studies.

As far as my knowledge goes, one needs to have 60% of marks through out the academics. Please check with bits if they have changed the rules.
@Satheesh
Satheesh, you may want to prepare for BITSAT and through that you can seek entrance into Bits for your masters.

Hi Mohan,
First of all thanks for this wonderful space!!
I would be great if you can guide me with this.
I work in HP and I am in to technical support with a goal to switch over to development either internally or outside. I have a 3 year diploma in computer science and engineering (2003-04) and BCA degree(Distance education) (2008). I got in touch with BITS and they said like I can do MS Information System.
My company does not seem to fund/ sponsor my education.
How would I go ahead and do this without the support from the company and do I need to be employed till the course if finished?
Also, is there any contact center/ person in bangalore whom I can go meet to take help? My understanding is that this MS information System carries more value compared to regular BE/B Tech. Isn’t that true.
Thanks in advance
Jithu

I have done my MSc(Tech) from bits pilani n now from last yrs i am working a software engineer in a reputed firm. i have exp. of nearly 2yrs. Now i am planning to do MS from bits pilani. So i wanted to ask can i get admission if i had 5.67 cgpa in my first degree. Will i get any benefit as i was student of bits earlier also.

@Mohan
If he had done Masters from On-Campus the name of the degree should not be MS Software Systems, it should be M.E.
Only the Master’s degree offered from Off-Campus are named “MS”

You need to decide on whether you want to do it through distance education or through full time course. In either case, you need to check their site @ http://discovery.bits-pilani.ac.in/index.html for more information

Yeah, even I doubt if it is true. As far as my knowledge goes, a person with MS from bits through distance learning can only do Phd at BITs and not anywhere else. Can you confirm on that?

I don’t think there is any restriction on number of ‘D’ grades, but more the ‘D’ grade, unlikely we meet the 5.5 CGPA criteria at the end of 3rd semester
