BITS pilani : Pursuing higher studies

I am happy to announce that I have joined BITS pilani to pursue my higher studies. Starting this 19th, my weekends would be productively invested towards achieving my postgraduatation. I have been approved to take admission into MS programme in Software Engineering from this premiere institute.

The duration of this course is 2 years (4 semesters) and it is being offered in collaboration with my employer Yahoo!. This is one more benefit that yahoo is offering to its employees starting this year. I am preveliged to be in the very first batch of such a collaborative program. Classes will be conducted in the office premises during weekends. It may be a bit difficult to manage work, studies and personal life. Thanks to my family members who have pledged support to realize my dream of getting masters from a renowed institution. Wish me all the best 🙂

    So I just want to know howz my score .. its good or average or below average …?

    • Vinay, it isn’t the score that matters, but the knowledge you have gained. I really don’t believe in numbers. sorry, i wish not to comment on that.

  4. Hi all,
    Can anyody upload/share question papers of the subjects for the year 2009. The question papers are not available on the BITS site. I am going to appear for compre exams on 3-4 apr and this would be my first open book exam.
    Currently my subjects are:=
    Object Oriented analysis and design
    Database systems and management
    Advance Operating systems
    Computer Networks

    If anybody could share the question papers, it would be great

  5. hi,

    i have a BE degree with a final pass out cgpa of 7.1/10 but in 1 of the semesters, i have gpa <6. Is this ok for admission to BITS for MS Software systems for distance learning program.?

    • Hi Sudershan, I haven’t heard about anything called comprehensive exam. What is it? All I know are ‘mid term’ and ‘final term’ exams apart from project dissertation. Am I missing something here?

    • Hi Sridhar, Good luck with that. There are a set of guidelines to be met while choosing a mentor. Please go through those first… I am not sure if I can be one since I am still in the process of finishing 4th sem 🙂

    I am planning to take MSSS through DLP. Applications are to be released in next month first week it seems.
    Meanwhile i wanted to know some info. Its mentioned that i need to have a mentor to get this course registered. I am planning to take this from company sponsorship.

    Now my question is.
    Does that Mentor need to be from my own company? What is the qualification needed for a mentor exactly? What role does Mentor play in my studies?

    Thanks for the wonderful space. I have done M.Sc in computer Sc from St.Xaviers College Kolkata. After that joined a company where I am working on J2EE. I have an experiance of 2 years alomost. I know I can apply for the MS in Software Systems for 2010 June session.

    • Well, I suggest you to go through the subjects and the level to which you can learn further. If you feel you have already covered those subjects in your MSx, I see no point in doing this course. As far as I know BITS doesn’t provide placement assistance for distance learning courses.

    • Well, I suggest you to go through the subjects and the level to which you can learn further. If you feel you have already covered those subjects in your MSx, I see no point in doing this course. As far as I know BITS doesn’t provide placement assistance for distance learning courses.

    I have 2.8y expernice in IT industry &71% in my engg, i am interested to join to MS program from BITS. I want some clarification from your side on same.

    (1) My self is eligible for this program on my experience level & my marks on B.E.?
    (2)My organization don’t have any tie up with BITS, in that case i am eligible for program?
    (3) If I choose mentor that one help me for 1year, after 1 year later I have change organization. Then can i change my mentor person?
    (4) This MS is really approved my AICTE? If not then its valuable course?
    (5)Can we do this course without mentor people, coz mentor don’t have enough time?

    • Hi Yash,
      1. AFAIK you do qualify to seek admission into BITS MS Program.
      2. Yes, you can sign up as an individual. No need of company sponsorship.
      3. That is something I am not so clear about. Pls be in touch with BITS to know more details on that front.
      4. No, Distance Learning Program is not approved by AICTE. See the discussion above for more details on its worth.
      5. Sorry, I have little knowledge. Get more info from BITS.

  22. Hello Mohan,

    Thanks a lot for your help. As only yesterday I came to know that my Mid-Term exams are already over. It was on 6 and 7 feb and I missed it. But thankfully they are conducting Make-up exam on March 20 and 21, so I will get a chance to appear. I am refering the online material but i think i will need more books to understand it better. Our main semister exams will be in 3 and 4 of April.

    Once again thank you for your help. If possible kindly share the name and Author of books you are refering. It will be a great help as I don’t have much time left and I am sure there will be many more students like me.

    Presently I am preparing for “Computer Networks” as I am very comfortable with this field.

    • Gautam, sorry I seem to have missed this comment. Well, there will be a list of prescribed text books in your course hand out. Please go through the same and refer to those books. That should be sufficient!

    Will it be sufficient to study the material given online or I have to refer any other book. As i don’t think BITS will provide any study material except the online one.

    • Hi Gautam, the study material is good enough to pass. But if you want to gain knowledge and learn more deep on the subject, you may prefer to read other material. It is always good to refer more books to understand and practice problems.

    Checked ur blog just now.
    I got admission into MS (SS) second semister 2009-10 batch but it took me almost 2 months to get the ID and password. I got my ID and password just few days back. Now the problem is it is not possible to finish the course of 1st semister in 1-2 weeks and as much i know our exams will be on April. So i wanted to know few things from you, hope you will reply to my queries.

    1) when will be our semister exams? Is it in April?
    2) when will they send me course materials (books etc or not)?
    3) Is there anyother exams during the semister except the main semister exam at the end?
    4) when do we have to fill the exam form and pay the exam fee?

    I am afraid, I might miss the dates to pay exam fee cause they have not posted anywhere abt this dates.

    • Hi Sreelakshmi, please watch out for admission notification on major national news papers or check BITS site for more information. Their site is pretty exhaustive and provide all info that one needs before joining.

  30. Hi Mohan,

    I am doing M.S. from BITS Pilani. I have taken admission in Dec 2009 in 2nd Sem batch. Due to health problem i have given only first two exams on 6th Feb 2010. I could not give two exams on 7th Feb. What should i do in this case? Can i appear in the Mid Sem exam again? What is the procedure for that? My first two exams also not went good. Please let me know what i should do next? I am very upset.

  31. If we are not able to clear one of the paper for the current semester.
    then how do we clear that backlog paper.Do we need to pay some extra fees towards that..?

    • That is true Swati, If you get an E grade in any of the subjects, you have to pay for the whole semester. But you need to ensure to clear only that subject while the grade on other subjects remain valid.

    Preparing for MSSS Mid exams. Final moments. Any idea on chapters to be focussed more or reference materials for prepration. Any materials which has Questions and answers. Please guide.

    Subjects are : computer networks , Computer org and arch, Database systems and Application , OOAD

    • Since mid term would be closed book exam, i suggest you focus on the proofs, numerals, explain this kind of straight forward questions. There won’t be much mind tweaking questions. But in case of open book exams, the game is completely different. I have a post on Open Book exams altogether. Go through it, might help you. Regarding the chapters for each subject, i am sorry but everything is included unless your professor has excluded few! i don’t have any material to share 🙁

    • Interesting question! Are you talking about distance learning programme? i don’t think it is that easy to handle both in dlp. Frankly, i don’t have answer for your question. Please check with BITS.

      • NO. Two DLPs are not possible at same time it seems. And if its company sponsored they usually dont allow two at a time.

    1. I am currently out of India on a long term assignment in US and would like to persue the program which starts in April’2010. Is there any provision for me to attend online lectures instead of attending the weekend classes? I work for HCL Technologies. Please let me know…
    2. Also what I understand from the blogs 132 & 134 is that upon sucessful completion of MS – SS program we can enroll for any distance learning PHD program from any university in India along with BITS Pilani. Can you please give me some universities that offer such PHD’s.

Could you please help me out with what kind of topics can i select as part of the Dissertation work and what will be the roles and responsiblities of the Superviser and the Examiners? Can i select my Project Manager as my Superviser?

      Nice to know about your studies. Well, even I am in the same phase as that of you! Done with 3rd sem exams and need to start with final semester dissertation. As per my co-ordinator, your mentor has to have either 10+years of work experience or a masters degree in computers. I am not very clear about the roles and responsibilities of Supervisor and the examinor. All i know at this point of time is that you need to have a mentor who will be assessing your project as well as guiding you through any hurdles you may encounter. I shall revert back when I get more details 🙂

    I have done B.Sc (Hons)Electronics – 70% & AMIETE – 60% with 6 yrs of experience in SCADA / Automation field (using application software & related scripting code). Are there any chances for my eligiblity for the MS Software Systems course from BITS under WILP scheme . Also can i propose a mentor distant from my location and outside my firm (being a power comapny with no core software professionals) as he too is an alumni of MS from BITS. what r the chances of him being accepted as mentor. Pls suggest what r the overall chances of my admission…

    • Mohan, nice to know about your aspirations to pursue higher studies with BITS. I am going through a collaboration course which my employer is offering with BITS. Since you plan to take up the WILP programme, suggest you get in touch with BITS directly to get all your queries answered.
