Hyundai India has launched its new car i20 recently and I went for a test drive of this car. This post is all about the review of i20 Asta. On the outlook i20 external appearance is more or less no different from i10, with few tweaks here and there. Though it is said that i20 will be replacing Getz, it is slightly a bit wider and lengthier than Getz. Also the height of the car has reduced a bit I would say. There are three levels of trim and a choice of 7 body colours to choose from vibrant or muted according to an individuals choice.
Seating:
In i20 front seats are excellent with good visibility though a bit lower than Santro. I felt a little bit uncomfortable since I am very much used to Santro Xing which gives an excellent visibility plus driver seating comfort for me :). Driver seat is spacious and comfortable for my height. However, I would doubt if seating will be the same for people over 6 feets. They would certainly feel the seat to be upright, steering to be low and not very comfortable. However the good news is that the front seats are adjustable in many ways. So make sure you get the right adjustment before you drive. My thighs were slightly brushing against the steering wheel when I sat initially, later on I managed to adjust the seat and then it was comfortable. Even the streering is adjustable. However the comfort level is not the same with rear seats. The legroom space is just about enough for rear seats and unfortunately is just okay for kids. It would be tough for elderly people to sit comfortably since the rear seats are too low. Also, the rear seat is very upright and this may make long journey for the passengers at the back slightly uncomfortable. Middle portion has a bulge and it will be uncomfortable for the person sitting in middle. Hence I would call it a 4 adult seater vehicle instead of 5.
Interiors:
The quality of plastics used is very good and instrumental panel captures the immediate attention. It has aux-in and ipod/usb ports built into the mp3 system. It is very well laid out with smooth lines and soft edges. Even a/c and music controls are well placed. The music system can be controlled from the driver seat with ease. Also, the side mirrors can be adjusted with electronics. Another interesting aspect about i20 is that it has a very large boot space, which can easily fit it a lot of luggage if you are planning for a vacation!
Engine, Driving Comfort and Mileage:
Ride quality is incomparable with i10 and much better than Getz. However, I felt at times the drive was very bumpy. This may be attributed to Bangalore roads or the condition in which the vehicle was. The car is totally in a different league with respect, ride, build quality, directness of steering, tough body and good tyres with a respectable petrol engine of 1.2 litres Kappa felt smooth. But not smooth enough due to the bumpyness which I have mentioned already. The gear ratios seemed very short, resulting in often gear shifting at low speeds making driving a little bit stressful in heavy traffic. Also, I noticed that pickup in the second gear was poor. However, gear changing is as good as in any Hyundai branded car. Company sales executive claimed a fuel efficiency of 12-13 kmpl in city limits for i20. I doubt that, don’t go for Hyundai car if you have mileage as priority.
Price:
As usual, pricing is a big prolem for Hyundai cars. Getz failed because of pricing for its segment cars and here again we have another example. With an on road price of 5.6+ lakhs for the basic i20 model, I feel it is on the higher side. The Swift is undoubtedly the king in this segment and has the best looks, the best engine in both the petrol and diesel variants as well as the best servicing network amongst competitors. Mentioned below is the onroad price in Bangalore for i20 versions of Magna, Asta and Asta(O).
i20 Price in INR – Bangalore | |||||
Model | Price | Insurance | Road Tax | Delivery Chgs | Total |
i20 Magna 1.2 | 479,900 | 15,502 | 63,348 | 5,000 | 5,63,750 |
i20 Asta 1.2 | 559,900 | 17,913 | 80,067 | 5,000 | 6,62,880 |
i20 Asta(O) 1.2 | 581,900 | 18,576 | 83,214 | 5,000 | 6,88,689 |

hello friends,
im confused between i20 asta petrol,i20 diesel magna and i20 magna petrol, which car to buy
ibrahim says
hi i want to buy i20 and my hieght is 158cms so it would be comfortable for me
Nilay says
Hi can any one give me idea about maintenance of diesel cars after 3-5 year, does it cost me too much after long period or today’s diesel engines are improved?
I am specially looking for Punto, i20 and swift.
Bharath says
The i20 released by Hyundai is a subcompact super mini car comes with lots of Amities. The i20 is available as Magna, Asta(o), Asta ,1.4 CRDi Magna,i20 1.4 CRDi Asta (O),1.4 CRDi Asta,1.4 Asta (O) Automatic, and 1.4 Asta Automatic versions.
joseph says
can i20 magna be fitted with sunroof ?
sunil says
I took a test drive of i20 and Maruthi Swift Dzire and would like to share some info. i20 is a great car with enough space inside and excellent looks. It is more advanced in technology compared to other cars and it is smooth driving, handling.
If you are not really looking for power you can go for i20, because i20 i felt underpowered. Anybody can identify this, try to accelerate the car if you are in 4th gear. But in Maruthi Swift or any other driver will get the real acceleration in 4th gear. Other than this disadvantage i liked the car very much. Also the car is bit high priced and i guess this is mainly because of quality interior and technology advancement they made.
Dzire you will get good acceleration as i mentioned, but rear seat people will not get much comfort or a smooth journey. In that way i20 beats any other car in the segment.
Again, make your own choice by test driving. The final decision would be ultimately individual choice.
Dhaval says
Hi Sujit take a test drive of both i20 and polo and decide which you like in terms of driving.Rest info about the cars is on the net Google it.i have got a i20 on 3rd Nov 2010 already done 1200Kms and the mileage i get is around 12-14.

Dear Freinds,
Could we see the KMPL on the panel of the car ? If yes how ?

hi @SG,
i got my new i20 asta one week ago. The car’s beautiful.
I wanted to know how long are you using your i20 and how long have you travelled. Did you get any problems regarding performance and maintenance. Thanks for your advice..
ANOTHER IMP ISSUE..The main thing is MILEAGE, will it be increased after FIRST SERVICE??
thanks friends, tc.
sam says
HI friends.
i also doubt what is the reserve capacity. The low fuel warning is ON. How many litres can be still in the tank. How far can I go. Can One of you help me, thank all…
Sam says
hi friends,
I got my new i20 asta (1.2 petrol engine) one week ago. The interior was awesome and exterior was incomdparable. But I am worried about the mileage. I put 38 litres and i drove 320 kms{in the city} and now it is signalling low fuel warning. It is new car so the mileage is not concerned. But looking at reviews I want to know the exactly mileage in city. Can anyone give me the exact feedback about mileage. It is helpful if any OLD CUSTOMER of i20 gives me the review.
SG says
Reserve is around 5 litres. I get around 12-14 km/ltr (with/without AC) in city. Try not to rev too much. Change gear before 2000 rpm.
Nihar Goradia says

Dear Mohan,
Nicely written review. Covered every aspect. I would like to add more to your question, 6 ft person can easily seat in the car. Even the driver seat is pulled back, rear seat comfort remains, as normal adult can seat. My brother is 6ft 2 inch. He can drive the car comfortably. I feel that, the wheelbase of car is higher in its segment. So cabin is roomy. It might be my personal thought. I am not challenging either from you.
I have booked the beauty. I will be riding her from DASSERA. Hope it will give atleast mileage of 12kmpl.
One more thing I would like to add to this review is : Hyundai has launched new SPORTZ version of i20, which shortens the margin in magna and asta model.
Thanks again for review Mohan.
Regards,
Anurag Andore

I am confused between Maruti Swift DZire and Hyundai i20 (both Petrol). DZire is a Sedan, with good boot space, good back space, powerful engine, low maitenance costs, but poor plastic quality. i20 has good interiors, less boot and back space, good looks, high maintenance costs etc. Mybudget is around 6 Lakhs. Please suggest which one I should buy ? I am curently 50:50.

S. Tariq Ali says
The Hyundai i20 might be a good car from inside.. but in terms of mileage.. we never received more than 7.00 kmpl. Way too expensive to drive..
SG says
I get 14.5 in city… and 19+ on highway. i20 asta petrol…
RAJNEESH says
I get 12-13 kmpl in the city and 17 kmpl on express highway Ahmedabad Vadodra….. So Millage it is ok.
But costing is little higher as compared to other similar models available in the Market..
Rajneesh says
One more important point for the new buyers; the pick up is not good in the second gear….if held up in traffic jam you will have to switch to first gear very often….. That is very important point for the buyers from Hilly regions.
SG says
Very important point for hilly region but other cars in this segment are not that good either. The second gear is weak, thankfully the gear shift to 1st gear is quite smooth. But anyway, this is a very heavy vehicle and a weak second gear is to help the mileage.
Rajneesh says
7.00 kmpl is very very less…I am getting 12-14 in city and 17 kmpl on highway, pls get you vehicle checked with the Company and also your driving conditions / habbits
Joyprakash says
hmmmm it is giving me 11/12kmpl in my hill station. on highway, i believe it’s giving me around 16kmpl. of course mine is old model, first model when only three variants were launched[magna, asta, asta(o)]. from april this year, era and sportz were added in its variants. True about pick up problem in 2nd/3rd gear in hill region. however, i am still able to drive in 5th gear hill town with moderate traffic around 20kmpl… just exploiting what is written in the manual :). but you know, in plain areas, it’s very smooth.
Aashish Sood says
Nice writeup… am planning to buy a mid sized car soon… wished you had covered some negatives as well while discussing features etc!
Mohan says
Thanks for the feedback Aashish, I shall definitely keep your suggestion in mind while reviewing cars in future.

Also some cars do have similar noise from rear right side from outside on a Bumby roads, Not yet fixed both of these issues with my car so far, just waiting for my second free service.
So far my Max mileage on Highway is 15.67 with AC ON / and 13.49 in city
Tips: Before taking to any car wash please do check with them whether they are using BORE WELL water or the Normal Well Water ? If its Bore Well then it will kill your wind shields with stubborn stains and your night drive will be hectic.

hi asif, very true that steering column noise has been removed in my i20 asta petrol. i complaint on my first free servicing, but did not fixed as i was in hurry. noise becomes more and more prominent later. pointed out specifically during second servicing and fixed. no problem now, but i got another noise somewhere near/below ac control 🙁 while vehicle is picking up it’s speed in my station town. thanks for tips.
P.S. my front right tire got bulging out when my jr. hit on a pot hole[big]… 🙁

Nice and comprehensive information on i20. What would you suggest to me out of i20 sportz and ritz Zxi?

Dear SR,
I was confused between i20 and swift dzire. Finally, I found that Dzire is best selling car; but i20 has fantastic looks from outside and inside it’s amazing. I have booked i20 sportz petrol. I will get delivery on DASSERA.

Anuraag,
How is your i20 drive so far ? I am also confused between i20 & Swift Dzire. One is a premium hatchback and other best selling Sedan in India for same price. I may settle down with i20 Sportz (Option) without Alloy Wheels.

Anuarg says
Dear Harsha,
Sorry for late reply.
The car is amazing. Some times only i feel like 2nd gear is underpowered. Getting mileage of 18KMPL on highways and 13/14KMPL in city conditions. Interiors are great. Takes almost every vehicle on road. In simple words: “Beauty and Beast”.
Enjoy the safe Riding.

SG says
I got my i20 Asta petrol two weeks ago.
Cons: Low gears a bit underpowered.
Minor cons: No Blue tooth, Remote is soundless, Front doors open even it is locked (bad for child, but then, you are not supposed to put them in front), sometimes the back gear does not get into groove properly (may be my problem…)
Pros: Everything else.
Minor pros: Head turner, you will see a lot of jaws dropping when you show your car, your neighbors will visit you whenever you are near your car to see it.
Comparison with Swift/Ritz: Swift/Ritz has a better gear ratios and pick-up is better. But once you take the i20 beyond 2000 rpm, its improves, well the car is heavier than the other two…. Everything else is better than the marutis.
Milage: I have put in 26 lts (+5lts from the dealer) power petrol and then I had to refill after around 415 Kms (with a/c 50% of time)…. pretty good for a brand new car even before first servicing (actually I am really surprised but I used to get 18-19 in city from my Maruti 800)… Specially in Bangalore where you have speed breakers every 200mts… Anyway, I don’t rev and try any funny unnecessary things and follow the best practices….
Space: Quite comfortable. Don’t expect to push the back seat to the limit and expect the back seat passengers to be comfortable. Boot space is also quite nice..
Price: I wouldn’t mind a lower price, specially as the dealer does not give even 1 Re off… and the road tax in Bangalore is a killer….
Not yet seen: How this one performs on hilly road….
Overall: Quite satisfied….
rajesh says
ritz an awesome car… interiors of ritz are superb.. u will enjoy d luxury comfort when driving ritz.As far engine is considered, petrol k series and diesel same as swift…. ritz have more sapce, comfortable legroom and head space…ritz rocks forever….
Anuj says
Hi,
@Mohan, Nice review indeed.
I am planning to buy a car and i think that by far, i20 is better than swift for all the reasons stated in the comments above.
My only apprehension is that maruti is bragging about k-series engine. Is it actually better than Kappa 1.2?
The features that i20 magna has, no one would have thought of in this segment, so, for me, the pricing is justified.
I didn’t feel any problem with the rear seat to be very frank and honestly if we compare it with Swift, it wasn’t bad at all.
Boot space is good. Interiors are class apart.
And, no one has mentioned about the Automatic Climate Control and rear A/C Vents in i20 Magna. Can anyone get all this in this segment?
Rear a/c vents is a big improvemnt in the ride quality of the passengers. These are located beneath the front seats.
Climate control will not only give a better ride quality but helps in fuel economy as well as it automatically shuts off the a/c when it is not needed.
It has a rear-defogger, which swift doesn’t have.
All in all, for me, i20 is the car.
-Anuj
kadhir says
Ritz can be noticeable in many small cars. Price wise it is ok. its small size will make easy drive in traffic. most useful in big citys. power steering enjoyable. sound system will trilled you.
yash says
i own the i20 too. It is a nice car but it lacks in certain areas like power, milage and A/C. Its a different case in Diesel version.
Prasanna says
i20 is a great car. I own one and I’m confident that long after the dust has settled in the battle for the best hatch, i20 will rule for a long time.
dishant says
i m really confused between swift n i20 both PETROL,which one to buy.
n one thing is more my 1st prefrrnc is towards mileage.
can anbody throw some light on this issue
yash says
Go for Swift for the simple reasons mentioned in above posts.
yash says
I own a hyundai I20 – Petrol – Asta – bought 2 months back – price on road 5,60,000 without registration
Positives
looks – great from outside as well as inside with a very nice dash,
Features (plenty) – Electrically controlled ORVMs , On-steering controls, USB and Aux in support, nice bright screen with information display, leather wrapped steering wheel, auto climate control, air cooled golev box, Five spoke alloys wheels, Keyless entry with awesome looking remote, 6 airbags with airbag disable system adds to its upmarket feel.
Ride – Very smooth , pretty easy to maneuver in traffic thanks to its great EPS. pretty stable at 120 km/hr with efficient breaks.
Neagtives
Audio – Quality is ok for regular music listeners. I had to put in extra equilizer and rear speakers to suit it to my needs.
Mileage – executives claim 12 kmpl in city…..lolz r u kidding me…… Anyone buying 1.2 L petrol should not expect more then 11 kmpl in city and thats when you drive really well. For people who like to zip zap the car dont expect more then 8 or 9 kmpl. On highway it can deliver around 14 – 15 kmpl.
Performance – 1.2 L petrol engine feels a little underpowered. you really have to use the power band to get some pickup which again decreases the fuel efficiency.
people have complained a lot about the A/C of this car. Even the company executives dont have the answer to their problems though i found the a/c pretty effective.
Ride quality – suspension is bit on harder side. One can feel it in car when crossing a sudden bump or speed breaker. Tyre noise can be heard even at a speed of 60km/hr.
Compared to other cars like Swift – the pricing is ok given the features provided in this car that is only if you like the features provided.
My advice – OK for those who need a fully loaded car with running of less then 25 kms per day.
Better to go in for swift for simple reasons.
swift Vxi – petrol on road price 5 Lacs
put in alloy wheels, a nice music system and plenty more accessories and you will still land up saving money on both the pricing of car and running costs.
rajat says
totally agree with you man!!!
i have a 3.5 months old i20 {silver color} asta version and i feel exactly the same way abt it…
though i have to say that like the rest of the owners, i am too facing a lot of problem with the ac of the car!!!
Ishan says
Hi Yash & Rajat,
Thanks for the reviews..
I myself drive a swift vxi….which i love revving and zipping most of the times. I lov the i20 for the entire package that it offers for 6.2lacs which no car in this range has to offer. I did a test drive of a 20,000km driven test drive vehicle, it defntly had its cons, maybe coz it is only used for test drives.
I wish to buy a car asap, my whole heart goes for i20 (Asta,Petrol) coz it is a fully loaded car. a small part of my mind says swift zxi !!
Have tried to get more reviews from the service engineers who i knw in hyundai, thy r positive abt the car.
Is there a possibility that we could increase the power in the i20..? i m sure it wud affect the warranty of the car.
do keep me posted. thanks !!
Mohammed Asif says
Yes buddy i20 is a good option if you are going for the Crdi, As u said u r interested in petrol, the only issue is its under powered. Sometimes while you overtake or something you feel like power is not enough though… Still there is an options to Tune the power. Go and google Petes Tuned i20 you will get the results and details.
Anil says

Hi
I am thinking of buying i20 Era model (Ex showroom price 4,51 in Delhi) but confused between i20 and swift LDi. Please suggest.
Interiors wise i20 has no comparison.
rajat says
well first of all you have to choose whether you want to go with a petrol or a diesal car.
if ur running is >=50 kms per day than you can opt for a diesal.
otherwise stick with a petrol.
if u do want to go with a petrol than i would personaly suggest you to buy the i20
i myself have the asta version of the i20 wich costed me around 6.1 on road in delhi
the era model which u r planning to buy might not have all the features of my car , but i am pretty sure that u would be satisisfied with it
anyways whichever car u choose, do take a gud test drive of it
happy buying!!1

i took the test drive of i20 magna. my height is 5’7” . I felt little uncomfortable while
entering in the driver seat. similar feeling i observed while getting out.
Is it possible to adjust driver’s seat.
Asif says
Dear,
Yes u can move your seats back/front, also u can adjust ur seat lean over side by the lever provided. If its on Asta version then you can even adjust your seat height up and down.
Saravanan B says
To all the folks interested in i20, this video review may give more insight
The i20 is highly refined car and has excellent features which other cars in the same segment does not offer!
the rear seat space depends on how far the front seats have been moved backwards!
some times in the test drive vehicles, if the front seats are moved back wards, it may seem that there is lack of space in the rear row!
Satnam Rajpal says
I am planing to buy a sedan. Budget is 5.5 Lack. My monthly running is around 700 km out of it 200 km is on highway, and rest in city traffic. Also suggest me should I go for petrol or diesel.
Asif says
you better go for a hatch back with diesel, Brand is depend upon you, like if u need a low budget maintainance car then its Maruti Suzuki only, so preferably Ritz. Else if you need a stunning outlooking car of the year then with your budget+ you can choose Hyundai Magna petrol.
Asif says
Modifications that am gonna do that am gonna do:
16 inch alloy wheels with yokohama A drive tyres
gonna lift all branded badges on boot like hyundai, i20, abs, asta things.
V-Cool – 70%
Zenon lights

Pavan Bhat says
Hey Mohan nice review!! I was actually comparing various cars in this range and this helped a bit in knowing i20!
Now that they have released 1.4 engines you might want to update your comparison for future readers 🙂
Mohan says
Sure Pavan, will do that sometime soon. Btw… why are you in the mode of comparing now? Howz your Swift doing?
james says
my younger brother using honda city.and elder one maruti swift.i had taken many drives on these cars.when i test driven fiat punto in mumbai.it was something like bmw.i liked it.with its male look,pickup,pricing.features.in swift maruti is using same fiat engine.i booked my fiat punto emotion and really enjoying.only minus point is that quality of the plastic used on the engine side is not good enough for a premium hach back car like punto.
Rajat says
dude
punto is not exactly a premium hatchback…
it’s interior quality is way below it’s competetion.
dev says
punto sucks dude ,,it takes 18.5 s for 0 -100 ….even a santro n alto r quicker
hkarthi says
nice post. i like the looks of i20. the engine is not bad, it is better than Swift diesel. but as you correctly pointed out in the end, my problem is the pricing. Why does Hyundai makes better cars and shoots themselves in the foot with pricing is beyond me! The fully loaded car with all extras for i20 costs around 7.3L which in range of a Sedan market! The natural option would be the Swift but I like i20. I am not sure which I will end up buying but planning to take a test drive on both.
gaurav says
U r right about the seating section. I am about 6 feet 2 inches tall.. Although I don’t face any issues sliding into the driver’s seat of my santro.. However, I found it uncomfortable to do the same in the i20, the steering was jamming into my thighs and the steering felt much lower (compared to a santro or even an i10 or a-star for that matter). The car itself felt lower as my head was almost touching the roof of the car.. I did manage to lower the seat.. but it dint help a great deal.. in this respect it was a little disappointing.. Otherwise the car felt great
shelin says
nice review. i have got some comments regarding suzuki swift. while going in 3rd gear the gear handles knocks back. there is no steering tilting in diesel segment.power steering is not smooth as that of hyundai’s .
Mohan says
Hey Shelin, thanks for your view. One thing is true, hyundai has the smoothest power steering! However, I haven’t felt that knock in 3rd gear with swift.
Asif says
The difference is Hyundai got Hydrolic Power steering , Much better, and the rest of the cars like suzuki etc is electronic power steering
Ishan says
Dear Mohan,
I already have a Swift Vxi which my dad drives. I need to buy a car for myself. After lot of thoughts i was narrowing down to i20 Asta (Petrol) coz of the looks, budget (6 lacs) and excellent features.
I love driving the zippy swift….havnt driven the i20 as yet.
What would you recommend ?
Mohan says
I would say both are equally good with proved performance. You may also want to consider Fiat Punto… Amazing car! review coming soon 🙂
Ankit says
please dont go with punto very dull csr it is
