My passport validity was about to expire in a couple of months and I was thinking of renewing it sometime soon. Very recently got to know about ‘Passport Seva Kendra’ (PSK) through a friend and decided to use this newly launched facility to renew my passport. All the information was available on their website about the documents, process, fee structure etc., It was indeed a very smooth option to fill out all the form detail online as well as submitting the same through their website. Also, there was an option to schedule the appointment with passport issuing authority online!
To be doubly sure, I called up their toll free helpline 1800-258-1800 to ensure I have the right set of documents and the process followed is correct. Since there was no change in address, I just had to drop in personally at PSK at a pre-scheduled time with current passport which is about to expire. Well, the other documents included the appointment acknowledgement print out and 2 self attested photo copies from the current passport.
I was told explicitly that there is no need to carry photographs as they have set up a digital imaging system to capture photo there itself while processing the form. Also, I was told that the fee for reissue of passport can be paid at the processing counter. All is well until this point.
Rest of the story as it unfolded made me realize the famous saying – “if everything goes smooth without any hurdles, surely you are in wrong lane”. Well, I had the appointment between 1:30pm – 2:15pm at Passport Seva Kendra, Lalbagh road, Bangalore. Reached the premises and got inside the building at 1:00pm upon showing the acknowledgment print out of the appointment. Had to stand in the queue here too to get a token for visiting processing, verification and issual counters. The queue wasn’t moving at all. After an hour one of the official came out and said the servers are down and it may take a while. Later on got to know that the servers were down since 11:30am! Thanks to Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) who have partnered with ministry of external affairs, India to empower the IT systems/infrastructure and to maintain these PSK kiosks.
Again at 2:30pm, one elderly official came to announce that they will switch over to manual mode of passport processing since the servers haven’t been restored and they are not in a position to retrieve the forms that applicants had submitted online. They decided to process those who had filled in forms in hand which weren’t submitted online. Online applicants were told to BUY form (which costs Rs. 10/-) and fill it up, ensure to have passport size photos, then head over to processing counters to get the work done. A fool in me, relying too much on computers had gone there without photos. I had 2 options : Either get the photos and fill up the form all over again manually or visit again some other day hoping to be lucky by then. Since there was a huge crowd and had to attend to work decided for the latter option.
So, this is what I learnt from todays experience:
1. Don’t rely on computer systems at government offices YET!
2. Always carry photographs no matter what whenever you need to fill a form related to govt offices.
3. Carry a pen in the pocket whenever you are out (my parents still shout at me for not complying to this since my college days, there is a bigger story on why don’t like to keep one… may be sometime later!)
4. Expect not to get the work done through govt offices as per the schedule.
Thanks for reading, hope you will not repeat what I did and may you have all the luck to get the “God’s work” done on time, as mentioned in the book! Remember, there is an engraved quote on the Vidhana Soudha – “Government Work is God’s Work”… YES! I understand that now in a better way.

Mine is post police verification so police verification will be after receiving the passport. I applied re-issue of passport on 22 Aug 12 under normal(initially I planned for tatkaal but they forced me to go for normal) and same day status was ‘passport granted by SP office’ after 4 days status was changed to ‘post police verification initiated in district SP office and passport printing is in progress’ so after 4 days status changed to ‘Your Passport has been printed and You would receive an sms/email once the passport is dispatched.’ Now same status from 9 days and still didn’t receive SMS/mail.

On 20.07.12 the status is “Police verification report is under review at regional passport office”. On 03.08.12 the status is “Passport application is granted and Police verification report has been submitted”. Since then I have been seeing different status every now and then .As on 5th September 2012 , the passport status is reflecting as “” Passport application has been granted and Police Verification Report has been submitted. You would receive an email/sms once the passport is dispatched. ”
Does anybody know when I can expect to receive my passport.It has already been more than 2 months of waiting !

Ideally you should get the passport in about two weeks once you get this status.
However, please note that status reflected at the PSK website is not correct always. So better call up customer care at 1800 258 1800 and ask them to provide the status of your passport by providing your file number and DOB. Don’t rely on the status given on IVRS, better talk with customer care exec and ask the status manually.

@RKJ – You know what? Long time back, I believe a month and half ago, my passport status was ‘Your police verification report is under review at the Regional Passport office n bla bla’. Then it changed to ‘Passport application has been submitted along with requisite documents and fees’ and now after almost 1 month it has changed to ‘Passport application has been granted and Police Verification Report has been submitted. You would receive an email/sms once the passport is dispatched.’
I fail to understand how the Passport system has become faster or effective.We are facing the same delays despite submitting the passport for reissue during Passport Mela.
Media has failed to take up the story of the plight of the common man beyond the submission of applications thru Passport Mela.
I raised a Service Request yesterday ie on 5th Sep 2012 .Lets see what reply they come up with.I will keep you guys posted on when I finally get the prized document – THE INDIAN PASSPORT…..hehehe 🙂

@Shefali – The whole procedure is has improved from what it was earlier but it still falls in ridiculous category. I had received my first passport after almost 2 years (was in 3rd year of my B.Tech when I had applied for it and when I received it, I was undergoing fresher’s training at Accenture). Five years after then when I applied for the re-issue, got it within a month. But there are many people for whom it is still taking a lot of time. By the way, did you get any response to the service request you raised? Usually they just give some meaningless answer 🙁

@ RKJ – It took me 2 years of endless waiting, dropping in emails,calls,all supporting documents in the Passport Office Drop Box ,applications to Ministers of External Affairs (to no avail) to get my first passport which was issued to me only after my dad , a govt official , had conversation with the Regional Passport Officer and despite his visiting the Passport Office (after 2 years) for 3 consecutive days , I was asked to fill out another application form just like the one I had applied on ALL BECAUSE THEY HAD MISPLACED MY PHOTO ON THAT FORM and all that while the status reflecting on their website was “Passport has been despatched etc etc” imagine..So considering all the previous hassle I went through for getting a new passport, I thought it would be easier for me to get a Re-Issue under the new system.. The response I got on the Service Request was something like “Your passport is being prepared and will be despatched soon” and from the Customer Care guy as ” Police has submitted the verification report.There are no issues with it.Your passport is in the last stages like printing,lamination” although the status on their website still does not reflect anything of that sort like printing in progress..M planning to visit the RPO soon…Lets see how much more time…

I checked the status in the morning it showed the old one and called up commissioner office to check if my pv was cleared he said yes. after an hour the status was changed to above one. I’m not sure if it was coincidence or not.

The status is correct..The process is given below..
1.PVR is completed and the commissioner will electronically send it to RPO.
2. RPO will start printing Passport and will await your file to reach them.. Both these things should happen at a time.. If either one of them(in some cases both) is delayed the status gets changed just like what u have got..
3.Once RPO receives your file with documents and passport got printed the status might change to “passport printed….. and in dispatch queue…”.It also require manual sign of a passport officer and stamp.as there are hundreds of applications now a days and that too you know how our lazy govt officials work, this might also take time
4.Then passport will get dispatched to you via speed post..

I took PSK appointment on 14th Aug. Got a call from police on 17th Aug told them I’m at office so they came the next day and verified my documents. Now my status is passport is printed and you will get sms and email after it has been dispatched.

Ur passport will be in printing queue..It took me 5 days to get updated from printing status to printed status..then it will be in dispatch queue..
After that u will receive both sms (to your mobile) and mail with the passport No. and speed post tracking number…In my case it took 3 days to get despatch status from printed status..Then to my surprise it took just 3 days to get my passport(to hand).. Surprised because once it is printed it will be signed by concerned authorized person of the Respective RPO..In my case it got signed from CPV division, Delhi itself even though i fall under the jurisdiction of Hyderabad RPO..That means that extra time of sending it to hyd from delhi, again in queue for authorized personnel sign, again in queue for despatch, speed post delivery from there is saved…So my passport got delivered all the way from Delhi directly..whereas some of my freinds got it from the respective RPOs(in our case it’s HYD)..
But no problem for you as passports get printed there itself u will get quicker delivery once it is dispatched..
Or if you want it urgent you can contact RPO(Passport officer may be you require appointment to meet him) and explain him the urgency and if he accepts that he may issue it to your hand.even it will save just 2 days in your case i guess..So better wait for the passport to get delivered to you if it is not utmost urgent…
Some of my friends in Bangalore got passports within 15 days from the date of application verification at the PSK.. So taking that into consideration delhi residents should get faster!!

No I have no idea in fact passport help desk personals also don’t have any idea about this but one thing you can do is to make sure that police verification report is fine and if really urgent get in touch with RPO as he will be in best position to guide you.
Also don’t wait for last minute surprises make sure police verification report is clear as it is the bottleneck in most of the cases.

I didn’t have to go to police station, call the customer service, or visit the PSK or RPO. Like it has been mentioned here, the status is managed by the passport guys not the police so they are finding excuses as to why it is getting delayed.
Currently, my passport status updated and it says that my report has been submitted and passport printing is in progress. But I would still wait for a week or two before expecting my passport as I have little or no trust in Govt. companies.
So, if anyone has a concern regarding this can call up the police, PSK, RPO or just wait a few days like I did.

Police verification could be done on 13 August .
On 30 August the status was “Passport printing in progress”
On 31 August : ” The passport application is granted and police verification is complete. You will recieve an SMs/email when passport is dispatched”
We have to fly to europe on 14 Sep and start with VISA formailities as soon as possible.
Can u plz tell in how many days can we expect to get the passport??
Is there any means to collect the passport directly from the place where it is printed –i guess it delhi .

I did call on the customer care number , but the executive says that as the passport portal is under maintenance , he cannot give us the status 🙁 .the portal is under maintenance since 2 days.Is there any other way to confirm about the status and get to know when it will come. Will going to delhi help ? where i guess the passports are printed…Or any travel agent can help us in Delhi ?

Hi Poonam – Two things.
1> Please don’t approach any agent, neither pay them any money. They can promise you things but won’t be able to help much.
2> I assume you have applied for Passport at RPO Bhopal, so you can approach the RPO Bhopal on any weekday in morning and get a token to meet the Passport officer. Then explain him that on 30 August the status was “Passport printing in progress” which got changed to something else later. It is already close to 6 weeks since you applied for passport and they are liable to reply if you don’t get it within 45 days. So approach them and explain the situation also mentioning that even PSK customer care is unable to provide any details.
Even though it looks a little complicated right now, I strongly feel that you will get the passport within a week.

Hi Sugunkar – Actually I too had applied for my passport on 18/07/2012 and received it on 16/08/2012. But in my case, PV took place on 25th July and they submitted the clear report on 27/07/2012. So PV is the main bottleneck. Since this is complete now, you should get the passport within two weeks. As a matter of fact, if you don’t get the passport even after 4 days of submitting the application, you can escalate the matter at RPO. Good luck.

This is one of the routine status messages and doesn’t hold much meaning, As a matter of fact, there is every possibility that status given on the site is not the correct one.
You can do either of these two:
1> Call customer care and ask them the current status of your passport. Just give them your file number and DOB, don’t mention about the status on the website. They usually have the most recent and correct status.
2> This will be a little tedious, but if calling customer care doesn’t help, visit the regional passport office.

You should visit RPO if you need it urgently. This generally happens when the doubt about your Annexure F. They communicate with the one who issued the Annexure F. This can take time.

Just wait for a few days – now my status has been updated so I think like Ashutosh said below, RPO is the guilty one as is obvious that the police don’t update all these status for us. Currently, my report is under review by the commissioner. So I guess it would be the same for others as well.

@ Sreejith: Unfortunately the status on PSK website is not always correct. If you call customer care, you have more chances of getting the more recent and relevant status of your application. Just give them their file number and DOB ask for the current status.
Once PV is complete, expect to get the passport in 3 weeks from that time.

I had applied for my passport reissue on 14th Aug, 2012 at Sai Arcade PSK. Now, my passport status is ‘Police Verification has been initiated on Post PV basis to Byappanahalli Police Station, Bangalore. I have applied for fresh passport on 14th Aug at PSK Sai Arcarde. POlice Verification was done on 18th Aug. Even my status shows the same. “Police Report has been submitted by Commissioner Office, District Bangalore and passport printing is in progress.”

Hi Srivasthan – This status is quite unusual. I think you have missed out giving the supporting documents such as matriculation or graduation certificate. Just check with RPO and submit the self attested photocopies.

I have applied for the passport on 30th of July, 2012. I don’t really have a big concern because I am aware that it takes time – knowing our amazing Govt. and Police. But recently, when I checked for the status on the website it is saying this:
“Pending for physical police verification at your respective Thana under Commissioner of Police, District ****** City.”
It is a big surprise especially when I have already completed the police verification. I am baffled because this police constable came to the house and verified everything and left. It has been around 7-9 days since then and suddenly, today there was this status. Will I need to ‘physically’ go there or is it just random status update?

Hi Maliha,
This is quite unfortunate. But the fact remains that such things do happen and commoners need to bear the brunt. Anyway, what I will suggest is, better check at the specified police station and get done with the physical police verification. Just don’t get into any argument. Go and complete the formalities. Also make sure to note down the police verification reference number. In most of the metro cities, you can actually check the status of police verification on the city police website. Good luck! 🙂

Thank you for the reply! I appreciate it! 🙂 I spoke to my father in law about going to the police station but he told me that he has some good buddy who works there. He called him up before going there and the police friend said I don’t really have to go and my file has been send to the commissioner of police of the city and it would be dispatched soon enough without me worrying. I guess it must have been some status update issue from TCS as Indian companies, private or public, fail to deliver anything other than their worst.

Hi All,
I had applied for my baby,wife and father’s passport at one go and for intial ten days before police called them for verification the status was “File sent to Police District SP”.
After police verification completed and file sent to SP Office of district(I confirmed this with Police) my status was changed to “Pending for physical police verification at your respective ***”. When I called Police guys, they said that after physical verification, police has to check whether person has any FIR against him/her in that district. Once this is cleared then file is recommended to issue.
Even though I have confrimed all my files were sent RPO by Police, the status was not updated properly and this is nothing but the kind of buying time blaming police department for delay in passport issuance. If any case people thought of contacting RPO, they will simply say its pending with Police and not with us as site shows. But in reality that is not the case.
I can say this because, my baby’s file was sent back to Police station from RPO due to missing thumb impression at one of the places. And the status was same before police called me second time. This proves that files are sent to RPO and RPO has not updated the status.
After friendly discussion with police guys, they said they never keep files pending for long time as RTI has made it difficult for them do this. And delay is 99% from RPO.

Just confirm with your police station if they have sent the report to SP office and in turn SP office has also sent the District verification clearance for you. They need to send this report in physical form if your SP office is not 100% computarised.

Pratik – I think you can go ahead with the visa processing. But going abroad without police verification being completed is not a good idea because if police don’t find you at the given address, there is very good chance that they will send the adverse report which will result in cancellation of the passport that has been issued. So leave country only after getting done with police verification.

To track the status of your passport application, you don’t need to login at PSK website. Just go this URL. Enter your file number and your DOB to get the current status.
Also, call 1800-258-1800 to get the exact status because one given on the site are not always correct.

I am not sure if if they waited for police verification to complete.few points to note:
– police verification status in http://www.ksp.gov.in is still showing initiated only.
– Policeman came to my house on 11-Aug, Sat. and by next friday, passport was dispatched.
– I called helpline on 13-Aug after my status was showing police verification in progress. They told me that actually police verification step is in progress. I enquired to them that my status was Post verification, but he said that’s not what is happenning actually.
I know I confused you, but I myself am not sure whther police verificaiton is complete or not.

I’ve applied for the re-issue of passport and the police verification is “Post Verification”. I applied for the passport on 13th August’12, but since then two public holidays came in between.
I’ll update the thread as and when I get any update.

Now the status of my application has changed to, “Passport ****** has been dispatched on 21/08/2012 via Speed Post. Speed Post Tracking Number is *******.”
I’m really happy with the service. It took only 4 working days (Excluding the day of application submission) for them to get it processed. This is what is documented on their site and I would say it’s working.

I applied for passport from PSK Bangalore [ Sai Arcade ] on 9th July 2012. They did not allow me to apply for Tatkal as my previous Indian passport was issued overseas. Though the address had not changed I had to undergo police verification.
Passport dispatched today 17th Aug 2012 after 39 days after application. Hope to receive the courier by Speed Post soon.

You will receive your passport either today or by Monday evening. Make sure that you stay at home for the whole day. Keep one of your photo id proof with you. Also, if while tracking the speedpost you get the message ‘Consignment not found’ then don’t worry. You will get the passport in time. Good luck 🙂

You don’t need to login to your account to track the status. Just go to ‘http://passportindia.gov.in/AppOnlineProject/welcomeLink’. Then click on ‘Track Application Status’ on the left hand side and then you just need to enter your file number and your date of birth to track the status. Also, you can call 1800-258-1800 (Toll Free) for the latest status as the one present on site might not be updated one. Hope this helps. Cheers 🙂

I applied in bangalore PSK. It was a veyr pleaseant experience for me. It was 100 times better than the office i visited in Boston USA for state id to one of my friends.
Very modern office inside,people treated me with respect. I took the documents required and there will be 4 counters( steps) one after the other they completed ( despite heavy crowd) it was systematic. Officer told me that I will get my passport with ina month( i applied normal mode) .Then after few days i received a call from police station asking me to meet them with documents. I went and met them. They completed verification of my documents in 20 minutes and got my signatures in their book . and after that i kept checking the status in the website. I got same messages as you got in the website. And one fine morning I received the passport at my home thru registered post. Over all it took 37 days to get my passport from the date of application.I did not bribe any one nor any one demanded bribe from me including police department. Just wait for some time . you will get your passport for sure.

yes it is normal..you will have to be patient..the police might have sent the report..it might be because of processing delays on part of PSK’s.You can also check status of your police verification on your respective regions police websites,i guess most of the metropolitan regions have come up with such website which give status of the police verification.there you might get to know as to whose part the delay is.

I called these numbers one lady picked up the call and told me that if I applied through new system and have 10 numeric digits in application receipt number then she don’t have any information for such reference number indeed she asked to check with the local police official.
on their website the status message is still same but I got to know with some official working in RPO that they have received a clear police report and the passport is in processing stages
so I am waiting for good news 🙂

Yes, same for me also. I applied passport for my minor son through passport mela in chennai at 23 June 2012 and i am still awaiting his passport. The Status in the website just says that
“Police has completed verification process on 19/07/2012. Your passport will be dispatched after ‘Clear’ Police Verification Report is received at Regional Passport Office. You would receive an email/sms once the passport is dispatched.”
I have enquired the local police station and also SP office. They say that the report has been sent to RPO. When enquired in the RPO last week, they said that i will receive the passport in 1 week. By tomorrow it is going to be one week since my enquiry. Still the status is same :(. Dont know if it is the same for all the applicants applied through passport mela?.

I would like to share the experience i had while applying the Reneval of Passport through Taatkal. What i understood from various people that Passport shall be applied from where you live ie means where you work and if you are applying through Taatkal you need to have 3 out of 15 documents or Verification certificate. However in my case, i work in chennai and my family is in Bangalore. I had applied from bangalore and i was prepared with 3 out of 15 documents for Taatkal but it was done with only one document ie account statement. another thing is i had filled up application for taatkal but got the appointment through normal since i was unable to get through taatkal. The passport application was processed with Taatkal on this 30th July and the passport was dispatched on 2nd aug. what i understand from this is if anybody is applying for reneval and if your previous passport is clear with all the police verification then you can apply with one address proof.even if you dont get appointment in Taatkal you can get the appointment thorugh normal and get this processed trough taatkal.

I had raised a Service request on 7th Aug and they had replied stating “Your Passport is ready and is due for dispatch.” Since the I have called to PSK helpline 5-6 times and they are saying that application is in final stage and my Passport has gone for Printing, lamination and quality check post which passport will be dispatched. No timelines given 🙁

I had applied for the passport on 25th June 2012.
My PV happened on 5th July 2012.
1. Then my status was tracking as “Passport application has been granted and Police Verification Report has been submitted. You would receive an email/sms once the passport is dispatched.”
2. On 25th July 2012, my status was changed to “Police has completed verification process on 25/07/2012. Your passport will be dispatched after ‘Clear’ Police Verification Report is received at Regional Passport Office. You would receive an email/sms once the passport is dispatched.”
I am wondering how long before i will only see “Your passport has been dispatched”
Any idea, what is the difference between status 1 & 2.
Please let me know what is expected time after status 2? I, as most of other folks here need the passport as soon as possible.

And then again adding to the confusion,

I guess these PSK employee’s make up this status’s according to their comfort,God knows when il receive my passport.
i had applied for it on 14th may ..and still after 2 1/2 months awaiting for it.. they say it will take around 45 days but i guess government services live up to their reputation so still the wait continues after it had cancelled all of my trips abroad.

Hey Mitul, Did you go to the RPO? Also, it seems you have applied in Tatkal scheme. Didn’t you follow up with the RPO as they have the timeline that they should deliver the passport within 3 days from the date the application was submitter.

Hey pavan…I did ask some 1 to check with my RPO…got info that they had sent my annexture F(Tatkal document) for counter-checking with my local authority who had issued it-on the very day when I applied…but the local authorities of my area who had issued annexture F were yet to send a confirmation to RPO regarding genuineness of the document…and thus my processing got delayed…also all this sending and resending is being done by snail mail…had all this not happened-the process shouldn’t take more than 3 days…
I suggest you to check ur status with ur RPO…and ur local police station (Normal application)…or annextureF issuing authority(Tatkal application)…
Also…idea of RTI is not very comfortable to me…It may get you information…but it does not ensure u a passport…its the passport authorities who wud give u that…so better meet them at RPO…

Hi , You are right saying Government work is Gods Work. God to mil jata hai par Govt ka kam nahi hota.. There are lot of loops which the public has to see while transacting with Govt employees. Recently one of my friend has to do a passport reverification where he was asked to go to one office for collecting a form. But when he reached there the security person didnt allowed him saying there a time which need to be maintained. 11 to 12. Govt babus meeting time is only one hour in the whole day… So shame.. Thats why there is a big difference in Govt facility and Private facility. I n PVT we have an escalation point but there is no such thing in Govt.

I applied for a re-issue at a Mumbai PSK on 15th May 2012. The police verification report was sent back to RPO Mumbai on 10th July 2012. Since then I have got two different statuses – 1) Passport Application is under review 2) Police Verification was completed. Passport will be dispatched once clear report is received.
I assume these are normal workflow statuses. My question for you is below.
In my passport application, I mentioned my current residence address as permanent. I have been staying at this residence for 1.5 yrs on rent. I just wanted to understand if calling a rented accommodation permanent can be an issue. Just like many working professionals, I stay on rent and do not have any other address by my name. Please advise.

Frankly I don’t have any information regarding this therefore i would not advise you anything on this. But let me tell you that only present address is printed on the passport. You can check for this query with passport seva.
And your statuses are normal workflow statuses. Hope you receive it soon.

I’m posting this for everyone’s benefit. After my PV report was sent to the RPO, the status of my application changed twice and the last status was ‘Police Verification was completed on 16/07/2012. Passport will be dispatched once ‘clear’ report is received.’
I had my doubts and visited the RPO today. It turned out that my PV report was adverse because I stay in Mumbai on rent, and hadn’t mentioned a permanent address (different from the current). My line of thought was that I do not own any house in the country, so why mess up by mentioning my parents’ address as permanent. But apparently, these days in Mumbai, Permanent address is a mandatory piece of information, specially for people staying on rent. This is to just to establish that the person is not a native (Ridiculous it may sound, since, if I buy a house in Mumbai tomorrow, I’ll suddenly become a native to the city).
Moving on, I was asked to write an application stating my permanent address and requesting a new PCC. I submitted the same. In effect, the entire PV process will happen again for me, and hopefully the report will be clear.
Please also bear in mind that the local police helpline (Passport PV status enquiry) are aware of the status of your PV report (Clear/Adverse). It is worth talking to them and finding out the status if your passport dispatch is delayed.
