Tata Indica Vista the new variant of Indica from Tata Motors. The new model has evolved nicely since initial version of Indica to Xeta and now to Vista. Pick up any news paper, one gets to notice the ads of this new car almost everyday. Interiors have been focussed more on those ads as well as all new look and the stylish features. I visited the Concorde Motors near Dairy circle in Bangalore last week to take a look at this car and test drive the same. Since I reached the premises around 6:30pm, I couldn’t manage to test drive the car. However, I had a good glance at the demo vehicle.
There are A slight central mid ridge on the bonnet is intended to give a V-shaped front but it resembles the styling of palio a product of Tata’s partner Fiat. Upon opening the bonnet you get to see the Fiat’s popular 1.3L multi jet engine name ‘Quadrajet’. The same engine is in Swift too with the name of DDiS. The c510 gearbox is also sourced from Fiat. But when the indica’s comfort and convenience combines with Fiat’s technology it could be lethal weapon against the likes of swift and i10. There are two other variants of this car apart from Quadrajet, one is Indica Vista TDI and the other being Indica Vista Safire. While Quadrajet(1.3L) and TDI(1.4L) are diesel engines while the Safire(1.2L) is a petrol engine. All these variants are available in 7 colors.
Sales person over there mentioned that the mileage of the Indica vista in city is around 16kmpl and in highway it goes up to 20kmpl for Quadrajet. Absence of ABS and Airbags in the Indica vista lets down the safety features of this car. The quality, comfort and convenience the Indica vista provides are pretty commendable. The boot space at the back and leg space for the back seats is very good compared to other models in the B+ category cars. There is a glove box that can hold even a laptop, under deck space to hold water bottles, cubby holes, wide door pockets and 60:40 foldable rear seats can give you the most comfortable journey that even a class above fails to offer. The front bucket seats are comfy, swaparound at some place to offer support ot every parts of your body. The driver seat is height adjustable. This car seem to be good value for money except that you wont get ABS and airbags when compared to Muruthi Swift. Here is the Ex-showroom price for various Tata India Vista variants in Bangalore as on 5th Sep 2008:

Yesterday my Indica Vista Safire ( Terra) met whith an accident. Myself & my father, the two of us were in the car. Accident happened at Noida with Hona City being driven by a lady. It was unmanned crossing. She did not see our vehicle & kept coming. Despite applying screeching brakes my car hit her Honda on the passenger side front door.
Today both of us are safe & sound because of this great car i.e Indica Vista. We really felt nothing in the passenger cabin. The front portion of the car was badly damaged.Since Honda was moving my car after hitting it turned towards left.
Nobody got hurt in the accident.
I must say it is a very safe & sturdy vehicle.
Pavan says
Thank God first — Vista next 😉
Anyway ….. Happy to know that you guys are safe.
I am sure when TATA’s Nano can meet international crash standards , they would have defenetely invested more in case of Vista’s crash resistance power. After all Vista is a vehicle born out of 1500 crore R&D.

Hello Gaurav,
This might be too early to ask for.
But if possible, please do share the process of claiming the insurance from the concerned. Like whom to approach , where to start, when to file , proofs required… etc.,
I am sure that will be of great help to many of us. Ofcourse not that everybody desperately wants it, but it will be great to hear direct experiences of somebody who has been through it … just in case if anybody in futures needs the information.
One of my friends who owns a two wheelers never filed for insurance just for the sake of lack of information on how to proceed. He was telling all kinds of stuff like Police, proofs .. bla bla.
Thanks in advance

hey Gaurav,
Sorry to know that you met with an accident. Thank god that no injuries to you or your dad. Thanks for that great info on vista buddy. This will certainly help a lot of people.

Hi Mohan,
Thanks for getting in touch. Today I got the car surveyed. TATA’S have really made this car solid. Lot of protection they have provided in the engine compartment. That is what saved us. Nodoubt there are plastic parts & I would have to pay lot of money from my own pocket, yet the protection beams that are there it is comendable.

Hi, I purchased Vista Saffire Aura on 31st July 09. Its been just 5 days since I am driving this amazing vehicle. The only hitch that I hv is about the average. I am not exactly sure but what I calculated it is giving me an average of approx 7.5 km/ltr in city. I am also keeping the gear changing between 1500 to 2000 RPM, hoping to get more efficient drive. I am worried as I hv read some good reviews about the average in this posts and others. Is it that the average would increase after the first service. Waiting for a reply
Pavan says
Hi Vishal,
The figure seems to be quite low compared to mine. Can you please share how you calculated the milege ?
I mean the process / way you used to calculate the milege. Then we can coment on your observation further.
Thanks

Hi Ashish,
As per dealer & other users claim Vista quadrajet will give average 15-16 km per lit. (considering both highway & city condition). But true picture is not known to me as I am not an user. I booked Vista petrol car. What ever I said that is based on my test drive experience of Vista quadrajet. But I sencerely felt that it is very good car with some defect. If rectified it will give very good return to the user. No idea about Swift as I donot like maruti built quality. Hence it is no no to me. Regards, Partha.

Dear Friends,
I wanted to buy a small hatchbach diesel car this week. Kindly suggest between Swift Ldi, Tata Indica Vista Aura(1.3 Quadrajet) and Fiat Punto in terms of performance, value for money and milage. My budget is 5.5 max. I am planning to buy the car this week only.

Thanks bakshi for giving fast reply,
Mr. bakshi please tell me abt mileage of vista and also tell me abt maintence of vista and swift , is it same maintance ?
Partha Baksi says
Hi Ashish,
Indica Vista quadrajet diesel model is outstanding. You will not feel that you are driving a diesel car. But AC is horrible. This is my experience in the test drive. It was a hot summer day. The vehicle took 15 minutes to understand that AC was running. In rear seat the condition was even more severe. There was no cooling effect. If AC problem is solved, indica vista quadrajet is a real value for money car. It is well built, spacious, comfortable and a real good choice.

Dear Friends,
After a lot of research on Maruti, Hyundai, Tata, Fiat cars, I selected Tata Indical Vista Saffire (terra) as my dream car and booked on last monday. Paid the full amount yesterday. Now wating for the delivery. My observations on different cars are as following:
1. Construction of Fiat & Tata cars are most rugged compared to other brands.
2. Hyundai cars specially i10 is truely awesome in look & finish.
3. Construction of Hyundai & Maruti cars is not rugged. Appear like fancy toys.
4. i10 is a pleasure to drive (both IRDE & Kappa). Comfort, space, interior everything appeared excellent.
5. Maruti Zen Estilo is also pleasure to drive . Comfort, space, interior reasonably good.
6. Driving comfort wise Tata Indica Vista is best.
7. Seating comfort, space Tata Vists is best.
8. Interior is not as good as i10 but reasonable.
10. Cost wise Vista is best value for money car compared to Maruti Zen Estilo, i10. Vists is better suited for Indian roads.
So I decided on Vista Saffire (Terra) and wish to use it for next ten years like other Tata cars. I booked my car from Concorde Motors Chennai (Ambatur). Till now I am satisfied with their response. Hope it will be good in future too. I paid Rs.3.71L (onroad) for the car. They are not giving any accessories other than floor mat set & mud flaps. Thanks for the patience. Regards, Partha.

That is a very good comparison and contrasting of various cars including Maruti, Hyundai, Tata and Fiat. Thanks for sharing your inputs.
ANIL says
1. Viesta disel is visible on roads but why viesta saffire (petrol) is not visible on roads?
2. What is the relationship between rpm/ torque/ milage? On the basis of these can we compare two different cars? And how?
thanks
Anil
Gaurav Anand says
Dear Anil,
Diesel is mor visible because of two reasons:-
Firstly, if diesel is available people opt for it, looking at lesser fuel cost. They donot take initial investment & maintenance into account.
Secondly, TATA’S are known for diesel cars.Vista has two options in diesel:- one with fiat engine & another TATA’S own TDI engine. Both give more milage compared to petrol version.
As far as Torque,RPM & MILAGE are concerned they are connected to each other.RPM means engine revolution per minute. Torque is the traction. It is the power to pull the vehicle. If torque is more at less PRM then it means that engine wear & tear would be less & vehicle with not require frequent gear changes & hence fuel consumption would be less. Such vehicle is more suited for city drive.
You should compare same class of vehicles. Do not compare diesel with petrol.Diesel engines have more torque.Actually lot other factors also come into play yet comparision of torque would give you fairly good idea.

Thank u gaurav for your valuable suggestion. I stay in durgapur near to Kolkata.when i sawtthe vista i fell in love with it. but some freind warns me. Coz i don’t see any vista petrol in my city though it is a long time to get launched. (when did it launch?) I don’t know why people are not buying it while it is mind blowing in look and comfert. can u tell me the saleing status in your city. Here in Durgapur it is not available so far. So i could not takre test drive. One more thing for you mr Mohan and all will the test drive make any difference. as testing any new car will give the same response regarding performance as it will be new one. kindly suggest. I welcome suggestion from others also. thanx
GAURAV ANAND says
Dear Arvind.
I live in Ghaziabad & here I see this car on the road. In fact in Delhi also this car is easily visible. It is selling here.People are apprehensive of TATA cars.Earlier cars were not upto the desireable standard. Now the situation is different. They have improved & after buying international brands they have access to good engines.Their collaboration with FIAT has helped get latest technology in engines & gear box.
I suggest you should test drive the car. This will help you decide as to whether it meets your expectations or not.
Mohan says
I second what Gaurav has mentioned here. Even I felt the technical advancements wrt engine and gear box. It is always good to take a test drive before deciding on the purchase.
Pavan Kumar says
Hi Arvind,
I own a Vista Aura Saffire and live in Pune. I do see Vista passing the roads of Pune everyday. Don’t think that you will be able to see them like Altos and Swifts. I beleive Vista was launched in 2008 so it will take sometime before it appears in large numbers. As far as the comfort, quality of the car is concerned. It has been just superb for me. It gives me a milege of 14 km in city traffic with AC on (after my first service). The gear box is too smooth. The ride comfort is amazing. The service has been exceptional. Would like to let you know that there are some buyers of i10 / Swift who curse for buying the vehicle for some reasons known only to them. So the factor of “bad-luck” lies everywhere.
But as far as Vista is concerned. It has been just an amzing vehicle for me. I really love it. Too many features at too competitive price.
Thanks

I want to buy a petrol car in the price range 3-4l. I am confused between i10, wagon R and indica vista aqua safire.
I think for safire, but it is noe yet proven. My freind suggest me i10 or wagon R. i like vista by look and space. kindly let me know its performance. and major problem. Kindly suggest the car to buy.
thanx
GAURAV ANAND says
Dear Arvind,
Vista safire is a great car.I have two of them.No problems at all.I am very pleased with their performance. It has given me an av of 17.74 kms on highway. Very comfortable, easy to drive & value for money. FIAT engine & gear box are great. TATA ‘S have come out with much improved body.Definately worth considering.
Pavan Kumar says
If you ask my personal opinion, don’t ever think of Wagon R. It has a great engine but worst passenger comfort 😉
Try to give a test ride of Vista / i10 and then decide. Hyundai’s problem is the cost of their spares and the availabity of their service stations through out India. Also the service of Hyundai is not good. TATA is better than Hyundai when comes to service.

Just read Saffire Petrol and Vista TDi price comes close to the DLS model.
Just wanted to ask, are there any major drawbacks, of buying this car (v2 DLS) since I feel I always wanted to buy a diesel one though I do not drive much.
Could you just give a brief about vehicle mileage on city and highway.

GAURAV ANAND says
I do not agree with the opinion expressed. Neither Vista is 1200 kgs in wt nor it is underpowered. FIAT engine is very good. i 10 has very good finish but front is all plastic. If hit by a cycle expenses would be minimum Rs 10,000 from pocket as insurance fron day 1 has 50% depreciation on plastic.Pls consider the driving conditions while buying the car. Compared to i10 Santro is a better option.Infact all new models whether it is A star or Ritz all have very high plastic content in the front portion of the car. Their bumper headlights etc are all integrated. In i10 even radiator is on plastic cords / bars.@AjayY
AjayY says
Hi Rachit,
The engine is good and the gearbox as well. The only thing is that the 1.2L engine is underpowered for a machine that is way over 1200KG in weight.
So, there will be issues when it comes to pickup and mileage.
Rest looks good.
If your running is for a petrol car, there are so many options right now. Have you looked at i10 kappa or spark? Spark is less costly and is a very nice car.
i10 is a bit costly.
Better take test ride and then decide.
Indicas are better for diesel rather than petrol.
Please reconsider.
Thanks!

Gaurav Anand says
Well as far as service is considered yes TATA is not good. You have to literally push them.I bought the Vista because I liked the car & for FIAT engine. In this price bracket their is no other car which competes with it.
If you are planning to buy TATA product then pls do not expect service like Maruti or Hyundai. You would be disappointed.Choose your dealer carefully it would definately help get better service.
AjayY says
Hi Mr. Khadija – if you are planning to buy Indica, I would rather request you to reconsider.
I just bought Indica Vista – Aura – Quadrajet model, and AC stopped working on first day. Next day I fought with dealer, and the person got it fixed by personally taking the car to the workshop. However, again it has stopped working.
It is just 7th day today.
I thought that Tata is not the same anymore, with niggling problems and all, but it is still the same.
And service is not as good.
If the dealer’s person has not taken the car personally, I would have been standing there like everybody else for the entire day, since there are so many cars there for service, and now they also do service for Fiat, and that has made matters worse.
khadija says

Hi Ajay,
I have Aqua Model.I got it for 3.79 lacs on road,Delhi Regn.I got benefit of 50% NCB on my insurance. From Tata I got mats & seat cover free.
I drive mostly in GZB,MEANING THEREBY car runs mostly in 3rd or 2 nd gear.Rearly I am able to touch 4th gear. With this on AC if it gives an av of 11 kms it is not bad.
Same Av I used to get from my Santro, whereas on highway it used to give an av of 19 kms with AC.
Vista is much bigger in size. I am quite sure on highway it would give an av of 17 kms provided one does not drive above 80 kms per hr.@AjayY

Hi Sandeep,
Engine response is good. No drop is felt when Ac is put on.Infact performance improves with AC on. It has CVCP engine wherein the torque remains adequate throughout. No engine sound. It is extreemly smooth.EVEN AT 40 KMS YOU CAN DRIVE THE CAR IN 5TH GEAR without engine feeling any pressure. Infact if accelaration is easy you can drive the car in 5th gear even at 35 kms without putting any pressure on the engine. I HOPE THIS WOULD HAVE ADDRESSED YOUR QUERY?@sandeep

Thanks for sharing your experience with Tata Indica Vista Aqua and Terra 🙂
GAURAV ANAND says
I have bought two Indica Vista’s safair. One Terra model on 6th March 09 & another one Aqua on 1st Apr 09. Both the cars are doing very well. They have done 1500 kms & 1100 kms respectively.I took Aqua on a long drive to Mathura & despite more than 2 hrs of very bad traffic jam wherein AC was continuously running & car moved only in 1st gear I got an av of 15.10 kms. I am sure other wise it would have given me an av of above 17 kms.
In city depending on traffic condition the av varies between 11 to 13 kms. Can’t blame the vehicle.Traffic is really bad & vehicle moves in 2nd or 3rd gear most of the times.
AC is very effective.Car is very comfortable, stable & easy to drive. Suspensions are great. We also have swift lxi (petrol) which was bought in Nov 08. Good car but Tata Indica Safair is lot more stable & comfortable. It is definately value for money. Cheaper by appox 1 lakh Rupees & offers lot more features.
Prior to these we had 3 santro’s. So far we are satisfied & quite happy with our experience.
