All those people who have been asking me about what is new in my little roof top garden, here is an update with photos! See it yourself and feel the freshness of home grown ‘mint’ aka Pudīna in many Indian languages. The strong aroma of these leaves upon sprinkling water is a must experience that everyone should try. Oh yeah, I am talking about the mint herb plant, not the ones that have been cut off from the soil. Mint has its own significance of using it in culinary, medicines, cosmetics and insecticides. For more detailed usage of Mint, see this wikipedia article. I just love the ‘masala vada’ flavored with mint! Not to mention, I can live on Pudina chutney with rice for days together!
Now that you have looked closer enough, let me show you how much of mint I have grown… 🙂
Feast for eyes with pleasing green? I am also thinking of giving away about half a dozen of Aloe Vera saplings for my blog readers to spread the green love. Due to logistic reasons, I may not be able to send it outside Bangalore. Still in the nascent planning stage to give away those plants in next IndiBlogger meet. I haven’t made up my mind yet on how to conduct a give away contest and choose the winners… Any suggestions?

Hi,
I want to grow spearmint at home in Bangalore – it is slightly different from mint. I believe it is called ‘pahari (mountain) pudina’. Any idea where I can find seedlings?
Divya says
Hi.. I have a small container garden in my terrace at Chennai. So far I have grown just okra, mulai keerai, siru keerai, thandu keerai, pulicha keerai, methi and spinach. I am crazy about mint (pudhina). The above pic is my dream. Thrice I have tried to grow them in pots with stalks from the vegetable vendor but all three times they died. Seeds are also not available. I badly want to grow many pots of mint. Could you or anyone tell me how to get a mint plant?
Diva says
You get from market mostly doesnt have roots. Keep few in a small pot with water in it. change the water every day and look for small roots coming up. You will find small roots coming within 3-4 days. Once you notice it, you can replant it in mud (moist, not watery). You should water it on alternate days with a sprayer (or sprinkle only). Once it started growing fully, you can sprinkle more water, no problem.
Arul says
Divya, Hope you were successful with pudina. I too live in Chennai. I have just stsrted my k. garden

Bhargavi says
Hi Mohan,
I was googling to see how pudina plants r grown. I came across ur site and the pics that u have posted are simply superb. I am liking it like any thing. I live in Indianapolis and planning to plant pudina in my patio. It is spring here right now. Can i go ahead and plant pudina now. Do i have to put the pot in the shade or in the sun. Or can i put the pot in my kitchen. How many times do i have to water it. Hope u give me the info if at all i am not asking much.
thanks & regards
Bhargavi

Hi Mohan, Forgive my ignorance on this subject, please let me know how do you grow pudina plants?…is it thru seeds(if yes, where do we get them) or thru saplings from nursery. Also, are there any organic ways to protect plants from leaf eating insects(no pesticides, please!!!)…love to hear on some home remedies for these pests.
Mohan says
No, if you find pudina leaves with bare minimal roots on its stems when you buy from local stores – just go ahead and plant that alone. It will grow slowly. Don’t use any pesticides, not required for pudina infact 🙂
Diva says
Great, thanks ! very interesting !
Milana says

Can you suggest the steps you followed for setting up a terrace garden. I want to set up one in my residence in chennai, but, am not sure, where to start and how to ensure it doesnt affect the terrace.
Mohan says
I think that qualifies for a separate post altogether. let me come up with one soon.
Roshmi Sinha says
Wow! Such a wonderfully mint fresh post 🙂
And join the club… We too are the proud owners of a terrace garden. It is our pride and joy…
Unfortunately, the water situation in namma Bengaluru isn’t helping the ‘green cause’ 🙁
Mohan says
Thanks Roshmi! Awesome… good luck with your terrace garden. Well, the water problem will be short lived, the rains are looking pretty promising this year.
sonali says
my fav – Pudina chutney/amul butter sandwiches, yummy!! I love adding mint to chole when I am cooking – it gives it a chaat flavor..

Mohan says
Thanks raghava… this may not be the right time to my lil set up. Surely, when it is at its best of colors, will invite you. Good thing you did… with soaring temperatures, these plants in a pot require more care.

Pooja says
wow this is awesome!
here’s an easy recipe- dry and crush the leaves into a coarse powder. add it to chilled beaten curd, like a raita. you can add small cubes of cucumber to. it’s very cooling, especially these days (summer)..
Shyam says
mohan may not like to dry & crush his own grown plant. 😉
Pooja says
so wait for them to wither and fall off 😛 ?
you get readymade powders in the market anyways..
Mohan says
why to go for ready made stuff when I have the readily available fresh greens? 😛
Mohan says
I don’t dry & crush the flowers… but I dont’ see an issue with this herb since that is the only way we can consume!
Mohan says
Wah… a recipe posted already? Hold on let me freeze upon the plan. Thanks for sharing a summer recipe though 🙂
Manjunath says
